ELECTRIC LIGHT SPORTS MEETING

TRACK AND CYCLE ATHLETES IN ACTION INTERESTING SPORT AT BASIN RESERVE SOME FINE PERFORMANCES With the New Zealand championships less than a month away, competition amongst amateur athletes for inclusion in the team to be sent to Christchurch was responsible for some fine performances at an electric light meeting at the Basin Reserve on Saturday night. Big fields contested the majority of the events, and. although a strong northerly wino was against fast times, the finishes provided plenty of thrills and excitement for the five hundred or so spectators who braved the elements. The form displayed in. the sprint events was of a very high standard. The 100 yards handicap' was a particularly fine race, the winner turning up in L. C. Veitch (Byds.), who secured several notable victories during the evening and demonstrated beyond all doubt that it is not too much to expect great things of him before , very long. Veitch, who is an ex-Waimate Iligh School boy, recently joined up with the Kiwi Club. A reinstated amateur, this was his first appearance this season, and he certainly did exceptionally well, winning the 220 yards handicap off the <lB yards' mark in brilliant style and with something in hand. It was unfortunate that C. H. Jenkins, whose training lecently suffered a setback as the result of a cold, was a non-starter. The Sprint Events. J. Wilby (32yds.). made no race of the 410 yards handicap, while the winner of the 880 vards handicap was T. Montgomery (50yds.), who won very comfortably. A. JD. Priestley was unable to produce his customary dash, although ho ran into second place. He did not start in the three-mile handicap, which resulted in an easy win for G. Bayne, a young runner, who has been performing well of late. He finished with a tremendous burst of speed, which epoke of solid training. F. B. Silver, who can also clap on the pace, finished strongly into second place, after running well throughout. The time was 15mm. 9 3-ssec., which, considering the wind, was a very fine performance indeed. Hetherington Wins Hurdle Race. Considerable interest attached to the 120yds. hurdles, contested by a small but select field, which included the New Zealand cbafpion, R. W. Lander. Lander, however, after hurdling well in his heat, was not at all impressive in the final, Hetherington and Sutherland fighting out a stern battle practically all the way, the former going away when the last hurdle had been cleared to win by a couple of yards. The time was 16 2-ssec. ' The club relay race was won easily by Wellington. Ladies Do Well. For the first time in New Zenand a ladies’ hop, step and jump event was included on the programme and attracted good entries. The stylo of the competitors was good, reflecting sound coachisg and training. The winner was Miss Sharp, who jumped 29ft. Gin., with Miss Wilson, 28ft. lin., second. Miss Sharp also won the 75 yards ladies’ handicap in fine style. Another good contest was the 100 yards ladies’ handicap race, the winner, Miss R. Malcolm (81yds.) winning surprisingly well. Field Events. Equally interesting were the field events, in which J. G. Sceats and F. S. Ramson were successful, the former winning the high jump handicap and the latter the long jump. Some Good Cyclo Races. The big cycle race of the evening—the three-mile scratch event—saw J. Carswell, who is riding well at the present time, at his best. Leading at the bell lap. he clapped on the pace. and. maintaining his position, got home in an exciting finish from M. Gane. with only a length to spare. The one-mile cyclo handicap was another great race, Horsfall scoring a good win. The 410 yards cycle scratch A grade was won bv 1). McFrcdries. and tho half-milo handicap by J. A. Foote.
