"I’M THROUGH!"
ALDA ON AUSTRALIA AND THE AUSTRALIANS
SINGER’S HYSTERICAL OUTBURST
THINKS NEW ZEALAND IS DIFFERENT
(Rec. November 13, 5.5 p.m.) Vancouver, November 12. “Never again I I’m through with Australia,” Madame Alda said on arrival by the Aorangi, in an interview while awaiting her baggage at the Customs shed. "What a place!” she shouted, waving her arms. “The people are simply loathsome;
—L. Wallace, photo. hotels are abominable; theatres unendurable ; railways insufferable. There is no heat in that country. I didn’t find a concert hall with a temperature higher than an icebox, and me in the most decollette gown. I’d rather sing in this shed. “New Zealand is different,” added Alda. “It is a lovely place—lovely people, lovely climate.” The reporter here interjected: “Of course, that’s your birthplace.” Alda replied: “I left New Zealand when an infant, so it is not a question of local pride. I like New Zealand — I loathe Australia.”
