TRENTHAM RACES

COUNT CAVOUR BEATS RAPINE IN GOLD CUP CENTREPIECE SHOWS GREAT IMPROVEMENT WET WEATHER AND SOFTENED TRACK UPSET FORM (By "The Watcher.”) The Wellington Racing Club experienced bad luck for the concluding day of its autumn meeting on Saturday. The fine weather broke overnight, when there .were frequent heavy showers, and when the wind dropped in the morning steady, warm rain fell continuously. It cleared fairly early in the afternoon, but spoiled the attendance and made the race track soft, resulting in several reverses of form. Count Cavour scored a very easy win in the Gold Cup, and Centrepiece won well in the Autumn Handicap. The Pacific Handicap for 2-year-olds went to Laughing Prince, and Merry Jest •, scored in the open sprint. The moderate attendance of patrons resulted in a very substantial decrease in the totalisator figures as compared with the last autumn meeting, amounting to over £2OOO.

The Gold Cup race was net a fair test. The state of the track was responsible for the downfall of Rapine in a race which he had twice won previously. With his bracketed mate, Star Stranger, he was installed a substantian favourite, despite the fact that he has always failed on soft tracks, and just as at Auckland under similar conditions Count Cavour beat him without effort. Star Stranger made all the' pace and finished close enough in third place to denote that he is in good order. Weight-for-age form between Count Cavour and Rapine has fluctuated in a remarkable manner, generally, according to the state of the going. Neither Hoot fall nor Hynanna made any showing. Hynanna looked improved, if anything, by his race against Commendation in the St. Leger, but lie was never going well in the soft ground. After the race the gold cup was presented to Mr. J. S. Barrett by the Hon. R. F. .Bollard in front of the lawn stand. .'.'Centrepiece completely reversed his form in the Thompson Handicap by .winning the Autumn Handicap comfortably. Certainly he had a moderate lot of opoonents, but the changed state of the going and the extra distance, on top of his wretched showing the firs

day. appeared reasonable grounds to expect him to be only moderately fancied. Yet he carried a very substantial amount of money. B. H. Morris rode him on Saturday, as his usual pilot, !•'. E. Jones, was unable to make the weight. Centrepiece has now visited Trentbam on two occasions, and each time a first day’s failure has been followed by a convincing winning performance at his next start. Hipo, who finished second, occupied a similar position in the same race last year to Star Stranger. It was rather remarkable to find First Acre installed in the position of first favourite, but he never , flattered his supporters. Novar appeared a possibility entering the straight, but he was unable to make. any impression on Centrepiece and Hipo. Oreum led for nine furlongs, at one stage having a big break, but she stopped quickly in the straight. Clarinda had no chance on the ground. The Australian-bred two-year-old Laughing Prince, who had been purchased at auction the previous day by Mr. T. A. Duncan, made an early re-

’ turn of his purchase money by winning the Pacific Handicap. He carried a substantial weight, but as he goes well in soft ground and was well forward, he was supported with confidence. He justified the support and won well, outstaying all his opponents at the finish. While the state of the going no doubt assisted him it was a performance which should make his new owner well pleased with his purchase. The Suburban Handicap was a splendid race. Seven horses were In line across the course at the distance, and then Merry Jest asserted herself. Considering the fact that she was unlucky the first day, she paid a remarkably good dividend. Royal Damon ran better coming from behind than he did the first day, when out in front, and Shirley made a remarkably fine effort under her 9.5. Civility was never in the picture, being unable to go with the field at any stage. She likes the ground firm. In four rides D. G. Morris rode three winners, Mister Gamp, Mandane and Laughing Prince. With rain falling so steadily _ during the hours that people were setting out it for the course it was only to be ex-

peated that the attendance would suffer, and it was considerably below the average Trentbam crowd on a Saturday. The totalisator receipts reflected the size of the crowd being £'18,433 as against £65,203 10s. for the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £16,770 10s. The total for the two days was £85,791 10s. as against £106,065, a decrease of £20,870 10s. The inquiry into alleged interference in the open sprint the first day was concluded. A complaint had been made that the leader, Royal Damon, had crossed the field too soon entering the straight. No action was taken, it being considered that the complaint was more or less frivolous, an opinion that anyone who saw the race wdl share. The successful apprentice iocl ey T. Green was unable to ride during the dav, having entered hospital ow’ng to an' attack of quinsy.

THE RACES DESCRIBED , HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP. Ardfinnan was a good favourite for the opening event from Sayauora and Radiate. When the barrier went up Radiate lost ground, Hokioi going into the lead, closely followed by Mister Gamp, Asleep, Lady Passenger, and Ardfinnan. Along the back the order remained unchanged, Hokioi, however, increasing his lead. The field closed up on Hokioi across the top, and just before entering the straight Mister Gamp went into the lead, followed by Lady Passenger, Asleep, and Ardfinnan together. Mister Gamp strode right away in the straight and had no difficulty in winning in decided fashion. Lady Passenger stopped quickly in the run for the post, .and was headed off by both No Favours and Radiate. Ardfinnan went well for a while, but was never likely over the concluding stages. ISayanora was never going well at any stage. HUTT HANDICAP. Only £7 separated Vesperus and Maudane for order of favouritism in the Hutt Handicap. Buoyant was first out z from the barrier, followed by Nincompoop, Vesperus, Our Jack, Mandane, and Black Mint. Passing the five furlongs post the order was Black Mint, Nincompoop, Buoyant, Modern, Vesperus, and Mandane. At the turn The Thorn ran up, and running into ’ the straight Black Mint was in front from Our Jack, Nincompoop, Modern, Beaumont, Mandane, and The Thorn, When well in line Black Mint and Our Jack retired, Nincompoop hitting the front with Beaumont and Mandane next. There was not much between these three at the distance, where Front Rank was putting in a good run. A little further on Mandane took charge, ridden out, and she won well by two lengths from Front Rank, who got up in time to beat Nincompoop by half a length. The Thorn and Beaumont were about two lengths further back, followed by Modern and Bennanee. TRENTHAM GOLD CUP. There were no scratchings for the Trentham Gold Cup, the Rapine-Star Stranger bracket being a solid favourite, while Hvnanna was better backed than Count Cavour. Star Stranger and Footfall were in front at the start from Count Cavour, Rapine, and Hynanna. Out of the straight, down the back, the order was Star Stranger, Footfall, Count Cavour, Rapine, and Hynanna. At tlie five furlongs post the field was all bunched behind Star Stranger, Count Cavour being second. On the turn Count Cavour took the lead, and from then on there was never any possibility of his being beaten, although Rapine did struggle up to within striking distance. When the straight was reached, however, Count Cavour just strode away to win bv ten lengths from Rapine, who beat Star Stranger by half a length. Footfall was fourth and Hyananna last. The going completely beat Rapine, just as it did in Auckland when Count Cavour beat him in the Clifford Hate.

Zealand and Auckland Cup winner Scion. PACIFIC HANDICAP. The Thaw-Covent Garden bracket was a firm favourite for the Pacific Handicap for two-year-olds, the next best supported being Melissa, Laughing Prince, and Arrow Lad. Covent Garden, Chips, and Arrow Lad were the early leaders, and Coveut Garden was clear of the field at the entrance to the straight, where Chip retired. Auratum and Laughing Prince then put in an appearance. There was a strenuous tussle among these three, Laughing Prince outstaying the others to win under pressure by a length, while Covent Garden finished a long head in front of Auratum. Wild Pigeon was fourth and then followed Bourse, Tone, mid Arrow Lad. Laughing Prince was sold the previous day to Mr. T. A. Duncan for one thousand guineas. He put up an excellent performance under his big weight, and proved too solid for his opponents, who might have troubled him more, however, on a firm track. AUTUMN HANDICAP. The Autumn Handicap was a great betting race, there being very little between First Acre, Clarinda, Hipo, and Centrepiece. From the start Hipo went into the lead, followed by Oreum, First Acre, and Novar. Going out of the straight the order was Oreum, Hipo, First Acre, Novar, Clarinda and Centrepiece. Down the back Oreum had a lead of five lengths from Hipo, First Acre, Novar, Clarinda, and Centrepiece. Running past the six furlongs post Novar was in second position, and running round the turn the order was still the same. Oreum was in front at the entrance to the straight, but Hipo and Novar were on her quarters, First Acre and Centrepiece being next. Hipo had Oreum beaten at the distance, but Centrepiece then put in his. claim and finishing strongly won well bv a length from Hipo, who finished two lengths in front of Novar. Firs: Acre was fourth, then followed Oreum and Clarinda. SUBURBAN HANDICAP.

Shirlev. Civility and Benzora were covered bv £1.50 in the open sprint, the first-named being the popular fancy by £6, Roval Damon and Licinius being the best backed of the others. After they settled down Zenzora led with Licinius, Deluge, Roval Damon, Stand- • ard and Lady Ideal. ‘Civility tailed off coming on to the course proper. Benzora was still in front with Licinius, Lady Ideal, Orchid, Deluge and Standard, with Royal Damon, Shirley, and Merrv Jest handy. Lady Ideal and Standard retired entering the straight, and at the false rail Benzora, Deluge, Orchid, Shirley, Royal Damon, Licinius and Merry Jest were in close order. At the distance these seven runners were in line across the course engaged in a magnificent struggle. Gradually Merrv Jest asserted herself and she crossed the line a length ahead of Royal Damon, who beat Shirley, by half a’ length. Licinius weakened into fourth place a couple of lengths away, followed by Benzora and Orchid, Deluge and Indian Sage all bunched.

MURITAI HANDICAP. Thorndale and Vertigern had a strenuous battle for favouritism in the Muritai Handicap. Master Clarence was last awav, and when the barrier went up the order of the leaders was Vertigern, Waterlow, Mandarine, and Gardant. Down the back the order was Mandarine, Waterlow, Flaming Ray, Vertigern and Kilmiss. Coming on to the turn the order was Mandarine, Waterlow, Green Cloth, Flaming Ray, Gardant, and Kilmiss. As the field entered the straight Mandarine led from Green Cloth, Assurance, Waterlow, Hymill, and Flaming Ray. When well in line Beau Geste put in an appearance and tackled Assurance at the distance, going on to win easily by two lengths. Master' Clhrence came fast into third position, being beaten by two lengths for second place bv Assurance. Then followed Flaming Ray, Gardant, Thorndale, Kilmiss, and Mandarine. The first four horses are all trained at Riccarton. Master Clarence was unlucky. The winner is full brother to the New

BELMONT HANDICAP. King’s Folly was favourite from Paddon in a good betting race for the Belmont Handicap. Kilmezzo got knocked at the start, King’s Folly and Waicullus going to the front from Hymgreat and Bronstell, with Paper Boy handy. One ein the straight, Waicullus raced strongly, to win from King’s Folly by four lengths, Paper 1 Boy being a length further back in third position. Hymgreat was well up, followed by Bronstell, Riverna, Horomea, and Macroom. The leaders ran wide on to the firmer ground coming into the straight, and gave Paddon an excellent chance on the inner, but he was unable to take advantage of the opportunity, being beaten two furlongs from home.
