MOTOR ACIDENT ON HUTT ROAD CAR AND LORRY COLLIDE LIGHTER VEHICLE ALMOST CUT IN HALF Five people were injured, one of them seriously, when a fiveseater motor-car, on its way to the races, collided with a lorry while endeavouring to pass a bus on the Hutt Road, just after noon on Saturday, The names of Ute Injured are:— Mr. J. A. W. Prater, of Stone Street, Miramar, who sustained cuts about the neck, for which he received treatment as an out-patient at the Hospital. Mrs. Prater, his wife, who suffered injuries to the back and legs. Admitted to the Hospital in a serious condition, she was reported yesterday to be progressing satisfactorily. Mr. William Cragg, aged 24, who resides at 19 Windsor Place. He was cut about the head. Mrs. 'Cragg, his wife, who received cuts about the face. Miss Jellyman, aged 32, of Dillon Street, Blenheim, who was badly cut about the face. Driven by Mr. Prater, who is an employee of the city milk depot, the motor-car, which contained four passengers, was proceeding behind a mot-or-bus to Petone. Mr. Prater, it is stated, swung out to pass the bus, intending to go between it and a two-ton sorry belonging to Messrs. Curtis Bros., which was being driven towards town on its right side of the road by Mr. Jack Deslandes Cross. There was no room for him to go between the two vehicles, however, and according to an eye-wit-ness the car swung right across fo the wrong side of the road, with the result that the lorry struck the left side of the car, broke off a wheel, and stove into the bodv, almost cutting it in two. The car, which was practically completely wrecked, was turned over, and the occupants were thrown underneath it. The traffic inspector on the Hutt road (Mr. B. S. Morrison), who was about fifty yards behind the motor-car when the accident occurred, at once proceeded, with the assistance of Mr. fcross, to extricate the injured people, who were carried on to the cycle track and made as comfortable as possible with coats and wraps. Dr. Giesen, who was passing, rendered nil possible attention until the Wellington Hospital Ambulance, which had been sent for by Air E. Page, S.M., who also happened on the scene, arrived within half an hour of the accident. The front fender of the lorry was severely bent on its left side, and the left lamp and mudguard were wrecked. Air. Prater and Airs. Cragg, after receiving treatment at the hospital, were able to proceed to their homes on Saturday afternoon. The condition of the other patients is satisfactory. CAR SOMERSAULTS AND LANDS ON WHEELS. By Telegbapu—Press association. Dunedin, March 20. A three-seater car with three passengers went over a steep bank on MJ. Cargill yesterday afternoon. The car turned two somersaults before landing right side up at the foot of the bank. No one was seriously hurt. Airs. Hamilton, March 19. At the inquest on Alice Myra Aforris, aged 18, the Coroner (Air. Wyvern Wilson, S.M.) returned a verdict that the girl met death through being run over by a lorry, allegedly negligently and dangerously driven by Edward Miller Rouse. Wtinesses stated that the lorry turned the corner on the wrong side. The girl suffered a fracture of the jaw, cheekbone, neck, and base of the skull,''besides other injuries, death being instantaneous Rouse was arrested on a charge of alleged negligent and dangerous driving, thereby causing the death of the girl.
