GRASS AND BUSH FIRE. There were two outbreaks of fire on the bush and scrub-clad slopes between York and Mahina Bays on Saturday—one in the afternoon and another at about 8.30 p.m. It looked at one time as though some very valuable and beautiful' privately-owned bush at Mahina Bav would be destroyed, but thanks to a willing band of beaters under Mr. W. About 10 o’clock on Saturday night a fire destroyed a six-roomed house at Tuakau, occupied by Mrs. G. Bakahcn and family of eight voting children. The father was absent at the time, lhe wife had great difficulty in escaping with the family, who were in niglit attire. The youngest child’s foot was burned. The family were lucky., as a few minutes subsequent to their exit the building collapsed. They now are homeless and clotheless, as all their elfects were lost. , HOUSE DESTROYED. By Telegraph.—Press association. Whangarei, December 6. A five-roomed house at Tikipunga, owned and occupied bv Mr. Eric Rowland Hardy, was completely destroyed bv fire on Saturday night. The occupants were absent at the time. The house was insured for £550 in the Standard office, and the furniture for £250 in the South British office. Be piepared.
