Mr. R. B. Horner, engineer to the Kaitieke County Council for the past two years, has accepted an appointment on tlie senior staff of the Survey Department of the Federated Malay States, and will leave to take up the position early in the New 'Year Mr. J. Farrell arrived from the north yesterday to make arrangements for the coming season of the J. C. Williamson Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company. The Rev. A. W. Stace, of Kurow, Otago, has been appointed vicar of the Lawrence parish, and is to be inducted in the parish in January’.

Mr. William Watson was re-elected to, the board of directors at the half-yearly meeting of shareholders of the Bank of New Zealand yesterday. In declaring him elected, Sir George Elliot, chairman of directors, said that Mr. Watson had been, without a break, a director of the bank for 32 years, and his long banking experience and general knowledge were of no small importance in conducting the affairs of this great institution

These gentlemen have been on a six months’ big-game hunting expedition in Africa, and are bringing with them a very big bag of trophies. Mr. Mark Davis, founder of the firm of Messrs. Grierson and Davis, wine and spirit merchants, of Christchurch, died yesterday morning at the age of 66, reports our Christchurch correspondent He had varied public and sporting interests. He had been in poor health for the last nine months. The late Mr. Davis was born in London and arrived with his parents in New Zealand when lie was about six vears of age. He received his education at Nelson College and Cook’s College, Christchurch, later assisting his father in the latter’s business as a ■reneral merchant. Mr. Davis founded the firm of Messrs. Grierson and Davis ibout 25 years ago, and came to be well known in Christchurch and practically all parts of New Zealand.
