The Hon. J. A. Young, Minister .of Health, left last night for Rotorua, where lie will confer this afternoon with the Arawa Trust Board on matters relating to public health among the Maoris. To-morrow he will officially open a new Maori meeting house. He will then return to Hamilton, his home town, for Easter, but will be back in Wellington on Easter Tuesday.

The Hon. Sir James Parr, High Com-missioner-elect, expects to sail for England with his wife and family about April 23. The Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister of Lands, returned to Wellington yesterday after a tour of Hawke’s Bay, in which he visited various soldier settlements and discussed matters with the settlers.

Mr. N. R. Chapman has resigned from the position of managing director of Thomas Brown, Ltd. The management of the company has been placed in the hands of Mr. J. T. Pettigrew, who has been appointed a director. Mr. H. L. Williams hals been appointed Wellington manager, and Mr. A. G. Sanderson will continue to act as Christchurch manager of the company.

The death is announced of Sir Harry Allen, formerly Dean of the Medical Faculty of Melbourne University, aged 72. Mr. and Mrs. Will Appleton have, returned to Wellington after a holiday trip to Dunedin and Queenstown. Yesterday the office staff at the local Education ’ Board met Inspector N. McKenzie, who will leave to-day to take up a senior inspectorship in Taranaki, and made him the recipient of a gold pencil. Mr. G. L. Stewart made the presentation. In replying, Mr. 'McKenbie said he would leave Wellington with a happv memory of all the kindnesses of those with whom he had come in contact.

Mr. W. G. Aldridge, M.Sc., chief science master at the Christchurch Technical College, has been appointed Principal of the Dunedin Technical College. A Press Association message from Christchurch states that Mr. W. Machin, manager of Messrs. Sims, Cooper, Ltd., has accepted the managership of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Ltd.

The death took place on Sunday night at his residence, Dundas Street, Seatoun, of Dr Thomas Bennett, M.D., late Brigadier-Major, Army ' Medical Department, aged 91. The late. Dr Bennett, who was a native of Tipperary, Ireland, came to New Zealand with the 14th Regiment, and served through the Maori War. After returning to England he proceeded with his regiment to India, and went through the Afghan, campaign, attaining the rank of brigadesurgeon. He retired from the service in 1883, and returned to New Zealand, settling at Bulls, where lie practised his profession for many years. Dr. Bennett also took part in local affairs, and. was at one tme chairman of the Bulls Town Board. He was for several years medical officer at Samoa. During recent years he resided at Seatoun. The late Dr. Bennett leaves two sons and three daughters—Messrs. R. E. Bennett (Wellington), T. E. Bennett (Queensland), Mrs. A. D. Crawford (Wellington), Dlrs. Toswill (Hastings), and Miss Bennett (Seatoun). The interment will take place at Bulls to-morrow. Mr. J. CreKe, the newly-appointed superintendent of the Wellington Municipal Fire Brigade, has arranged to leave Sydney for Wellington on Thursday. He will take up his new duties next week.

Mr. A. D. Cook, manager for New Zealand for the “Sun” Insurance Office, accompanied by Mrs Cook, left Auckland last Thursday by the Ulimaroa for Sydney. Mr. Coo’k has been appointed general manager for New South Wales and assistant-superintendent for Australasia for the “Sf U,” and Wil take up his duties on April 1. Mr. D. S.
