HUMID CONDITIONS
MORE RAIN PROBABLE
“Very humid conditions have prevailed of late in many parts of the country, and there have been some thunderstorms,” said the Dominion Meteorologist (Mr. D. C. Bates) last evening. “We are likely to have more—both rain and thunder,” he added, explaining that a heated condition of the atmosphere, combined with great humidity and variable winds, such as had been experienced recently, were very apt to cause thunderstorms which were more or less local in character. Such storms usually occurred in the latter part of the afternoon in summertime. , . , . About one-third of an inch of rjm fell in Wellington during the twentyfour hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday. Many other parts of the Dominion shared the fall, to a greater or less degree. Reports received by Mr. Bates yesterday (all for the twenty-four hours to 9 a.m.) showed that the greatest fall was in the Gisborne district, which benefited to the extent of two inches. Maraekakaho (Hawke’s Bay) reported 1.35 inches; Wanganui .90 inch- Foxton, .28 meh. In the South Island the greatest fall appears to have been at Arthur’s Pass, which reported 1.5 inches. Greymouth reported .98 ‘“According to last evening’s forecast, the weather may be expected to be dull and foggy at times, with misty rain probable in many parts of the Dominion. The barometer is likely to rise soon. STORM AT TAUMARUNUI. By Telegraph —Press Association Taumarunui, January 12. The town was visited by a heavy storm this afternoon, accompanied by lightning. Fortunately it passed quickly and did no damage.
