WOOL MARKET
* SPIRITED DEMAND AT CHRISTCHURCH GOOD TO SUPER SORTS ADVANCE IN PRICE By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, January 7. The seco id Christchurch wool sale of the season was commenced this evening. The two first catalogues were sold before an adjournment was made. The total catalogue comprised 20,023 bales. The quality of the offerings is very disappointing. A good deal of the wool is tender, and in many cases dingy. The back country clips show the effects of the severe winter and erratic spring. There was a full bench of buyers representing all centres. The sale was a sound one froiy the outset, the demand being spirited and the competition general It was in marked contrast to the hesitancy and irregularity that were features of the opening sale. All classes of wool met with a firmer demand and good to super wools showed an advance of from a halfpenny to a penny pci pound on the first sale, whilst shabby sorts sold more freely with little appreciable advance. As an instance of the briskness of the bidding and unproved tone of the market, only 56 bales of the first catalogue of 4432 bales were passed and 27 out of the second of 1798.
The top price of the sale to-night was 22i’d. for merino. The best Corriedale price was 21}d. A twenty-bale lot of halfbred made 21.]d., and a seven-bale lot 2bld. A three-quarter-bred lot made 18d. and crossbred 13d. Merino pieces made to 17Sd., Corricdale to 16d., and halfbred to 16-ld. The sale will be resumed to-morrow morning.
