There have lately been placed on exhibition in the fish section of the Dunedin Museum two coloured casts of rare fishes, the originals of which were caught recently iu Dunedin waters (states the “Star”). The first of these is Centralophus tnaoricus, a rare oceanic fish, so seldom seen that it has no common name. It has been recorded only twice, previously. The specimen from which the cast was made was caught at Deborah Bay by Mr. W. Ledgerwood. The other fish is Mora Mediterratieus, likewise without common name. It has never been recorded before from New Zealand waters, but is common in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. This specimen was taken at Moeraki by Mr. J. Edmondston. Both casts have been beautifully executed by Mr. H. E. Gibson, the museum taxidermist, and it is difficult to believe that they are not the actual originals in the colours of life. As a matter of fact, the originals are stored away in spirits for study by specialists when opportunity arises.

A distinguished Swedish journalist has been visiting Southland, and the other day, as the boat pulled out to make the run from Bluff to Stewart Island, word was passed round that the visitor was among the passengers (says the “Southland News"). Soon he was pointed out, and became the cynosure of all eyes. A gentleman of authority on board approached him and courteously entertained him by pointing out the places of interest and retailing stories of the days of old. He paid particular attention to the Swedish settlers in the district, and at last the gentleman who was being entertained asked: “But why do you tell me so much about the Swedish people here?" “Why,” waA the reply, “1 thought you would be interested. Aren’t you Mr. ?” (giving the name of thejournalist). “Mr. ,” said the stranger in astonishment. “Why, I come from Not tingham.” The feelings of the entertainer may be imagined, as also those others who had given so much attention to one who would never have Kot it as an ordinary English tourist.
