ROWING

(By

“Sculls.")

Rough weather during the greater part of last week hampered activities m tho local clubs. Nevertheless, quite a num. ber of members were to bo seen traming for club races to be rowed next Saturday and during the following week. Star Club.

On Saturday afternoon competitors in the Ladies' Fours decided not to allow a choppy harbour to interfere with their contest. ' Accordingly the race was rowed in the whalers over a halfmile course. The results were as follow, .the names of the strokes being mentioned in each case:— First round: Herd beat Oborn, Cooke beat McLean, Hinge beat Wakelin and McKinley beat Shorland. Second round: Cooke beat Herd and Hinge beat MqKinley. Tho heats were close contests, there being no more than a length between each two competitors. In the final Cooke heat Hinge by about two lengths. The winning crew comprised Cooke (stroke), Brookes (3), Whitaker (2), M. Moffatt (bow). Wellington Club. The first heat of the senior fours was rowed last week, Wilson’s crew beating Bright’s crew by two lengths. Heats in this race are to be continued as opportunity offers. * Next Saturday the Kempthorno fours will be decided if weather permits. For the race, which covers a distance of one mile, there are seven crews entered, the names of the strokes being Wilson, Mawson. Moye, Adams, Cookson, A. Collins and Chisholm. Officials of the club are gratified at the large increase in the meinliership. This is now over the hundred mark, some forty new members having been enrolled since the season opened. At the present rate of progress there is every nrospect of the membership being doubled over last year’s 'figure ere tho end of the season. Finance Perhaps the busiest officer in all clubs at present is the treasurer, writes “Poverty," in the “Southland Daily News,” and it is most essential at this time of the season that members should seen ro his autograph early, and thus enable the smooth running of affairs from the start. "Poverty” has sounded the right not* nd his words, as he infers, apply to clubs throughout the Dominion. "Sculls” does not know how clubs outside Wel-

'ngton stand in this matter, but he is well aware that local clubs have in the past suffered financially through the dishonesty of a number of members. This expression may appear to be more than meets the case, but can a young fellow who joints a clnb knowing the financial obligations involved be termed anything but “dishonest” when he fails to pay his subscription ?
