TRAFFIC THROUGH THE CANALS

.One method ot arriving at the shipping strength of the nations is a consideration of the traffic of shipping through the Suez Canal and the Panama Canal. Through the Suez Canal the passage of British shipping is, iM’'course, the greatest. In 1924 tiio British tonnage passing through this canal was 14,067,405 tons, against 13,193,457 tons in 1923, and 11,568,291 tons, the average for 1910-13. The total tonnage using the Suez Canal last year was 23,828,4154, against 21,302,406 in 1923, and the British percentage last year was 59 per cent., against 61.9 per cent, in 1923. Danish, Dutch, French, Gorman, and Italian shipping using the Suez Canal showed considerable expansion last year. Excluding ilie shipping of the United States, tho passage of British shiping through the Panama Canal was 58.9 per cent, of the remainder. Next camo the Japanese, witli 7.9 per cent, of tho remainder, and then the German with 6.4 per cent. British shipping passing through the Panama Canal last year was 6,097,6 fl tons, against 4,892.338 tons in 1923, i.nd 2,760.188 tons in 1920. Last year Japanese shipping passing through tho canal totalled 815,908 tons.
