A MASTERTON FIRE
HOUSE TOTALLY DESTROYED SVORK OF BRIGADE HAMPERED BY WATER SUPPLY By TbLBGRAFH —SPECIAL CoilßEsroNDW'r. Masterton, November IS. A six-roomed house, situated in Makora Road, owned by Mrs. A. Rutlierfurd ’ (Alfredton), and occupied by Mrs. Wells, an elderly widow, was totally destroyed by fire at 11 p.m. Mrs. Wells' was- the sole occupant of the house, and shortly before 11 o’clock left her dwelling to take a cup of tea with her son-in-law, who lived but a few doors away. A few minutes later her daughter observed the mother’s house in flames. The fire brigade was immediately summoned, but owing to a strong southerly wind, which was blowing at the time, the fire had a 'strong hold before the brigade arrived, and their efforts were mainly restricted to keeping the fire in check. The water-main in this street is a 3-in. dead-end, and practically no pressure was available, but a turbine motor was put on an adjacent stream, which provided sufficient water to keep the flames from spreading. Mrs. Wells had been engaged throughout the day in packing her belongings in preparation for a visit to Christchurch, which she had intended commencing in the morning. The contents were insured for £250, but no other details are available.
