For the past twenty-four hours a southerly gale has been raging, and to-day has been bitterly cold, with occasional gleams of watery sunshine, and many showers of haij. At the first yacht race of the season held at Lyttelton yesterday several competitors were capsized, and launches had a busy time rescuing occupants. The ferry steamer had a rough passage, not arriving till 10.15 a.m., while the Tees, which left on Saturday afternoon for Pitt Island, put back and anchored. The Waipahi, from Wellington to Dunedin, also put in this, morning. One boat, the Pioio, which was taking part in 'the Sanders Cup trials on Saturday, was overturned, driven ashore, and totally wrecked.
