C.J.C. RACES CONCLUDED

MIMETIC AND MANDANE WIN

RUNNYMEDE BEATS RAPINE IN STEAD CUP

McCARTEN RIDES 8 WINNERS AT THE MEETING

( By" Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”)

The racing carnival in Christchurch was concluded at Riccarton on Saturday when there was another day of close fmishes. In the Members’ Handicap Mimetic won by half a head from the bracketed pair Grand Knight and Fool’s Paradise, who were separated by a head. In a three cornered contest for the Stead Memorial Gold Cup Runnymede and Rapine fought out a thrilling finish in which Runnymede scored by a nose with Count Cavour beaten off. The Fendalton Handicap saw the Oaks winner Mandane win fairly comfortably from Star Stranger with Royal Divorce in third place. Out of the 32 races decided during the meeting the North Island horses won 19. A feature of the meeting was the success of M. McCarten, who rode the last three winners on Saturday and finished up with eight successes for the week.

There has never been a better meeting at Riccarton from a racing point of view. Close finishes were consistently presented to the judge, and on Saturday the racing was equal to any seen during the week. There .was a great struggle for supremacy in the Members’ Handicap, between Mimetic, Grand Knight, and Fool’s Paradise, the issue being in the balance right.up to the very last stride. The duel between Rapine’and Runnymede in the Stead Cup created intense excitement, and the crowd gave the winner and runnerup‘a fine reception. Rapine was unlucky in both the weight-for-age events be contested, going down each time by 'a small margin. During the previous days the north Islan 1 horses had won their share of events, and honours were even, but on Saturday liorses from this end cleaned up the card, the only race going south being the two-ycar-old handieip. North Islanders won ninteen races, and with the exception of,the Stewards’ Handicap., on the first day, they secured the big prizes, their list of successes including the New Zealand Cup, Welcome Stakes, Criterion Handicap, Derby, Metropolitan Handicap, Canterbury Cup, Jockey Club Handicap, Oaks, Members’ Handicap, Stead Cup, and Fcndaltou Handicap. In several of these the minor places also came up this way. M. McCarten had a great meeting, riding eight winners, the last three on Saturday! and his wins were secured in bi'u events, anuvigst them being the New Zealand Cup, Canterbury Cup. Stead Cup, Oaks, and Fendalton Handicap. The weather for the week was fine and warm, and on Saturday it promised to be the best day of all. Half-way through the afternoon, however, a southerly, gale sprang up, and it became cold and unpleasant. Apart from a light shower, which laid the dust, before the last race, there was not enough rain to interfere with the conclusion of the programme. The meeting will also go on record as producing some of the most sensatioib’l ffnd unexpected results. The dividend paid by Comic Song is not the''largest thqt has been seen at Riccarton, but it is many years since anything approaching it was hoisted, and on the average the winners paid substantial amounts. On Saturday the totalisntor handled £58,792 10s., as against £66,256 10s. for the fourth day last vear. This made the total for the meeting £207,933 10s. for the four days, a decrease of £25,277 on last year’s total of £237,210. An inquiry was held after the Seymour Handicap had been decided, and as a result C. Eastwood, rider of Gaybird, was suspended for a month for crossing and interference in the running. ’’ J SUBURBAN HANDICAP.

Enare was the favourtie for the Suburban Handicap, and he ran a good race, but in the finish had no chance with the two North Islanders, Agitato and Tiega. Agitato has been improving with racing, and it was not a bad performance on the part of Tiega to give him a year and 51b. and run up to him. Viewpoint was made second favourite, and form gave him a good cliance, but he bled, and McCarten had to pull him up. None of the others ever threatened danger, but Giantkiller was a long way back in the early stages, and he put in a good run home to finish fourth. He was some lengths away from the winner, be it looks as if Giautkilleer is coming back to form. CRESSY WELTER HANDICAP. The Cressy Welter Handicap saw Orchid in a favourable light. He waited on the leaders till the distance, and then came along to take the stake from them in clever" style. He is a greatly improved gelding this spring, and he carried his lOst. like a tradesman. Kaiti was favourite as the result of his good race on Wednesday, and he made a good attempt, but had to put up with third place. Arpent, for a first appearance in open company, ran a fine race, and there is no doubting the usefulness of this Acre gelding, who won the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui as a two-ycar-old, beating, amongst others, Lady Cavendish. He is now back to his best form. Economist ran prominently, and finished a close fourth, and was not too lucky in the straight. Piquant was in obe of her worst moods, and the field was eventually dispatched without her. Sun Up was expected to make good, but he failed to conic on in the straight from an excellent position. Lava was prominent until the straight was reached. Quest was never going like a win-ner,-and Victory Bond, as usual, showed great speed into the straight, and then retired. SEYMOUR HANDICAP.

I'onu pointed to Carnot in the Seymour Handicap, and lie was installed favourite. Well up all the way he looked an easy winner at the distance, where his rider was still hanging on to him, but, as earlier at the meeting, the waiting policy was overdone, and he went under in a close finish to an outsider in Mv Hobby, who is the makings of a very useful sort, for he was one of the last away, as the result of jumping up in the air as the barrier rose. He finished very solidly. He paid a good double-figiire dividend, but Ins win was as surprising to his connections as to the public. In his previous start at the meeting My Hobby was expected, when R. Reed rode him, but he failed. He was purchased as a veal ling bv his trainer, who passed him on to his patron. Indian Sage ran up to his powers, and was not quite good enough. First Acre was rather unlucky, as he suffered through the interference caused by Gaybird, whose rider was subsequently suspended. John Bradburv was well back early, but finished up well in fourth place,

and is a good prospect for an early stake in the south. His Majesty was second favourite, and he was another sufferer from the antics of - Gaybird, but it did not look as if it spoilt a winning chance.

MEMBERS’ HANDICAP. The Members’ Handicap provided a great finish. The bracketed pair, Grand Knight and Fool’s Paradise, were warm favouiites from Inferno and Mimetic. Gra.vl Knight was not too well placed earlv. as he dwelt at the start, but at the ’distance he had pushed up on the, rails with Fool’s Paradise and Mimetic. He was in front with 100 yards to’go, and a rare struggle wa.s witnessed between the three of them from that point. Owing to Mimetic's hanging out tendency, Reed took hint up on'the inside, between Fool’s Paradise and. Grand Knight, and riding a great finish, he landed his mount a winner in the last. two strides.. Mimetic, ‘who disappointed after his win in the Great Northern Foal Stakes as a two-vear-old, has come good, and promises with age to become a firstclass performer, although he may never make a stayer. Grand Knight has also thoioughlv discounted the theories regarding liis courage, or rather Ins lack of it ‘ He mar have won bad he got away better, 'but in any case .he is proving a first-class proposition as a racehorse. Fool’s Paradise ran a great ra'C He has not done quite so well as expected, but he should not be long in winning a stake. Inferno ran a very bad race, last most of the way. Sunny Loch ran surprisingly well, and finished up fourth. It may presage a return to form. Winkle s Best was carried off his feet in the early stages, but was running on at the end. Mireusonta and Finora were done with at the end of six furlongs. PIONEER HANDICAP. Limited was again trusted with the largest sum in the two-year-old handicap. but be again failed from lack of stamina, after being one of the leaders to the distance. He will no doubt be -unning on a little better later in the season, or on a turning course. Paperchase was expected to repeat her earlier performance, and she ran a good race, but probably ..on pccount of the early pace Countersign and Paper Bov canie along at the finish and took the leading places rather easily All the placed horses are by Paper Money. The winner is out of Kilberry, and the runner-up out of Kiltcel. 1 he Humbug colt Decoy Bird showed a lot of speed early, but was not able to run on. His turn should come in due course. STEAD MEMORIAL CUP. Runnymede occupied the position of favourite in the Stead Memorial Cup by less than £2OO from Rapine,, and Count Cavour was not very seriously .considered, Runnymede led all the ‘wav, and won by a very narrow margin from Rapine,- who had to come : round Count Cavour at the top of the straight, and received a bump from I the Count, who was beginning to I flounder. It may have cost Rapine the race, but there is.no dodging the fact that Runnymede. is a good three-vear-old, and a winning performance ’is alwavs the convincing one. Rapine may be'put awav now till the autumn. He’ pulled up and cooled off quite sound. Count Cavour was outclassed. ELECTRIC PLATE. Glentruin was a warm favourite for the Electric Plate, a special weight handicap, according to age. At the weights she looked to hold her field comfortably, despite the fact that she was in need of a race, but she disappointed badly. .She was'never in danger of running into a place, and on the wav she pulled up her connections will have some difficulty in keeping her on her feet. Lady Cav- ! endish just came in as she liked, and but for getting into some trouble in I the early stages of the Stewards’ HauI dicap she would probably have taken a hand in the finish. Megalo was . the outsider of the field, but she was | equal, to running a good second. She 1 has alwavs been able to go fast for 'five furlongs, and her price was twice I as good as the winner’s. There was ! mouev to say Nincompoop would show something, but he ran badly, and at the finish was paired off last, with I Glentruin. Licinius ran a fair race, but Ilka was done with at the distance. FENDALTON HANDICAP. Star Stranger was the favourite for the Fendalton Handicap, but the pool was a big one, and the prices going about all the good ones were remunerative. Koval Divorce, for instance, was paying double figures, and the winner, Mandane, close to it. The tliree-year-olds Mandane and Star Stranger, both about half a stotie over weight for age, came out of the com test with flying colours. Mandane improved wonderfully as the result of her two races in the Derby and Oaks, and it can be said she had her race won nearly a mile from home. She is a commanding filly, with a tremendous stride, and as she got out well, McCarten let her run along, and although Star Stranger challenged strongly he could make very little impression on Mandane. Both these three-vear-olds will make matters interesting for Pauinvniede later in the season. Royal Divorce ran a great race into third place. He did not pull up too well after the race, but seemed all right a little later on when he was seen walking off the course. Merry Day put in a. phenomenal run home from a long way back, and had anyone suggested dur-

ing the running that she would have finished just behind the placed horses from where' she was at the half-mile, he would have been ridiculed. Deucalion was well backed, but he did not run up to it, and never looked like repeating his victory of last year. It would seem that he has trained off. Footfall did hot get away well and was well back in the first three, furlongs. With the leaders at the top of the straight the effort found him without a run home. Haze was in the bunch throughout. Clarinda was not too lucky. She was well enough up at the distance to have her name proclaimed, but she could not get through.
