SENTENCE OF DEATH
PASSED TWENTY-FOUR TIMES ON THE HANOVER VAMPIRE London, December 19. The German murderer Haasman, who was tried at Hanover for the murder of 27 youths whom, on nis own admission, he inveigled to lua house and killed, was sentenced to death 24 times. —Aus.-N.Z. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Berlin correspondent states that the death sentence was passed twenty-four times on the Hanover vampire Haasman, the Court holding that three other cases had not been proved. Some alienists estimate that his atrocious and loathsome crimes .number at least fifty. Haasman in most cases made the most detailed confessions. He spent days on the grim narrative of how he cut up the bodies and disposed of the fragments. Judgment was pronounced under qnnaralleled circumstances. The police had received news that a notorious fanatic was en route to the Court with the avowed intention of shooting Haasman after sentence was passed, in order to prevent any anneal for merev. Every person entering the Court was searched for arms, and when the Judges entered armed gendarmes took up a position in front of the dock. Haasman listened to the sentences without wincing, and replied: “I accent the ludvment fnllv without reservation. Condemn me to death. I am not mad. though often in a state when T know nothing. Make it short. Deliver me from a life which is a torment. I will not petition for merer nr anneal. I have made things easy for von.
