CARRIED BY BIG MAJORITY EARLY START TO BE MADE WITH WORK With three email returns yet to come, the poll taken in the Hutt County on Friday for the purpose of ascertaining the ratepayers’ decision in the matter of borrowing £45,000 (i the county’s contribution under the Main Highway Board’s scheme, is definitely carried. The heavy rain made a tremendous difference to the voting, although the fact that nearly 800 ratepayers braved the elements and voted, was considered very satisfactory. At Belmont, where only two votes were recorded, the booth was surrounded by water, and therefore practically inaccessible. The county chairman (Mr. A. J. Mackay), when seen by a Dominion reporter on Saturday, said that he was very satisfied with the result. Ratepayers had supported the proposal wholeheartedly, and although many of the booths could be reached only after great difficulties, there was an excellent muster or voters. Particularly was he pleased with Paraparaumu, where 117 ratepayers voted in favour of the proposal, and only one against it.
