UNEMPLOYMENT
BRITISH LABOUR PARTY TO CONSIDER SITUATION GOVERNMENT’S SCHEMES INADEQUATE ' By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Rec. October 7. 5.5 p.m.) London, October 6. ; The Labour Party and the Trade Union Congress have summoned an emergency meeting for October 12 to consider the unemployment problem, This is the sequel to correspondence between Mr. J. R. Clynes and the Ministry, the outcome of which is considered unsatisfactory, the Government refusing to summon Parliament earlier. Mr. A. Henderson, speaking at Derby, said there would probably be two million people wholly or partially unemployed by Christmas time, with possibly three million dependants. The Government’s schemes, according to its own figures, would provide work for only about one-seventh of the unemployed. The country was confronted by an appalling situation, both urgent and dangerous. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
