A WARNING
WRONGFUL OPENING OF LETTERS “Many people do not seem to realise the seriousness of opening a letter addressed to another,” said Mr. A. T. Markman, Secretary of the,Post and Telegraph Department, to a Dominion representative yesterday. “This is an offence which I am led to believe has grown more common than it used to lie in certain circles, either through inadvertence or idle curiosity. There is no doubt about the serious nature of the offence, and it is to draw public attention to it that I am issuing u notice to be exhibited in every post office in New Zealnad, trusting that it will act as a warning to the public ” The notice is as follows: — “Before a letter is opened the address should be examined. The delivery of a letter to a person for whom it is not intended does not excuse the opening of the letter by that person. Section 91 (1) of the Post and Telegraph Act, 1908, prescribes that every person who, contrary to his duty, opens, or procures, or suffers to be opened, a postal packet, is liable on indictment to imprisonment for any term not exceeding two years, with or without hard labour, or to a fine of £5O. or to both.”
