SAWMILLERS IN PROTEST
CONTROL OF BUSH TRAMWAYS.
At a meeting of the Main Trunk Timber Trade Protection Guild at Tatunarunui last week strong opposition was expressed “to Government control and administration of private tramways, as forecasted in tho annua! report of the Director of Forestry, and as reported in the Press.” Further reference was made to this matter yesterday by Mr. A. Seed, secretary of the Dominion Sawmillers Federation. An erroneous impression apparently had arisen in some quarters., he observed, that sawmillers were objectin'’ to the present control, of bush tramways by the Public M orks Department. This was not tho case, Sawmillers recognised that some official control and inspection of tramways and bridges must be provided for in order to safeguard workmen and others. “The Public .Works Department,” Mr. Seed added, “already undertakes such an inspection and control, and with this we arc quite content. What we object to is a further and unjustifiable interference with private rights acquired legitimately under past laws. We regard the proposed Government control and administration of tramways as an objectionable and absolutely unnecessary interference with industry.”
