DUNEDIN CONFERENCE TROUBLE ON QUESTION OF STATUS DEADLOCK OVER CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHTS Bt Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, August 21. A meeting of delegates of various centres of the New Zealand Boxing Council was held in Dunedin to-uay. Tho president (Mr. F. J. Campueii) occupied the cha.r, and delegates were present from all centres, from Auckland to Invercargill. Trouble arose at tho start, Air. G. Talbot (Wellington) raising a question as to the status of the cdmerence. He held that delegates from associations as well as the centres should have a vote in the meeting. , A lengthy discussion ensued, and finally Mr. W. G Mellish moved: “That tins meeting resolves itself into a conference of local associations.” ' The chairman said that he could not accept the motion. . A motion was then put and ,-arriJd, that the ruling of the chair be not sustained, and Mr. Campbell vacated the chair. A notice, that the conference resolve itself into a conference of delegates from local associations, and that it continue the busmess was carried unanimously. Mr. Campbell then resumed the chairmanship. A remit from the Southland Association, that the council be recommended to form a separate centre ,or boutlikrd, with headquarters at ln/eroairnli was carr’ed. It was decided that all correspondence between the Otago Boxing As.,oriation and the council regarding the McOuarrie-McCleary fight be ’aid on table Mr. W G. Atack (secretary of the council) stated that be had not the correspondence with him, as the council held that it was, a m aL.. fm- them to decide. ibo Otago " ‘ h » i pondence, and could supp y tte oomeil, £ •SSJ S ‘i.« f-rigy epeewne rer>s<o» ° f “S.A" 1 lid meetins of all associations at lineton within two mpntns aftu Au B i 1 the committee to consist cf Messrs. W. McVilly, J. W. Heenan, K Blundell, Guise, L. Stewart, and fa bot tho draft rules to be submitted to all rsspeiations 21 days before the next conference.” . , A deputation was received from the Otago Boxing Association with referent to the disqualification Otago members as a result of Hie otti tude they took up in connectioh with the dispute with the council. Iho Jas of the contretemps was placed tofore the deputation, and the point was stressed that the Otago Association had not been given an opportunity of defending itself. It was decided to give Mr. Kirk chairman of the council, an opportunity of placing the council’s views before the conference. , .. The chairman permitted a discussion to take place on the unfortunate impasse which has arisen in connection with the championship fights. Ino Wellington and Hawke s Bay delegates refused to budge from the attitude they have taken up, that rmg champions should meet champions, and the Runners-up may meet runners-up, but will not be matched against champions The chairman said that the Otago Boxing Association was strictly following out the decision arrived at at the Auckland conference last year, and which laid it down that two competitors in each class, with the exception of llv and heavy-weights, were eligible to take part in the championships. The Otago Association intended to stick to that rule. _ Tho Wellington and Hawkes Bay competitors will not, participate unless a change of decisions is arrived at at the last moment It was decided that the conference affirm tne principle that in future championships only champions meet champions. Mr. Talbot’s Inst words were, however, that S would not get over tho present difficulty. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS QUESTION OF ELIGIBILITY By Telegraph.— Press Association. Dunedin, August 21. SLsri. T»lb»l (Wollmgon). (Nan-er), and Heath (Hawke’s Bay) state that tho attitude they adopted in regard to those, eligible to fake part in tho New Zealand boxing championships at Dunedin this year, was definitely notified fromltho outset, and tho principle supported by resolution of tho North Island conference, narnolv, that tho North .and South championships were elimination contests with the view of bringing together tho best two men in each class to contest the New Zealand title. The arrangements here provided are not championship matches, but a series of eliminations. There was n ® ccr^‘ 11 . S that the champions from the w °ltD would meet tho champions from the South; in fact, the matching was such as to leave the possibility of tho ultimate final for the championship being contested between two men neither of whom had qualified for championship honours by winning an island championship, or of a champion being called upon to meet a man from Ins own island whom ho bad previously defeated or who had even been defeated in the early stages of the island elimination contests. Such an. arrangement was obviously defeating tho object ot the elimination contests provided by tho island championships. Tho North and South associations concerned were not prepared to sacrifice their principles for such an arrangement . The statement concludes: ‘ It is not tnfo to say that mon have been withdrawn; they are ready to compete under proper conditions. The statement made that Wellington and Hawke s Bar imposed terms is misleading so far as it suggests they endeavoured to obtain an advantage for their competitors. The Otago Association previously allowed it to bi) understood that it supported the principle supported in the North as is evidenced by its telegram.
