AUTOMOBILE CLUB
ROADS AND ROAD SIGNS. A proposal to put on a watchman to look after members’ cars at public functions in rhe Town Hall and elsewhere was discussed <t yesterday’s meeting of the Wellington Automooile Club. It had originally been proposed to charge a small fee and issue tickets as is done at left-luggage depots, etc., but legal advice was received that if a charge was made the club might become liable in the event of a car being stolen. The matter was referred, to the By-laws Sub-committee to report to next meeting. A lady member resident ct Day’s Bay wrote saying that she had heard a lot about the activities of the club, but could not find much evidence of them in her neighbourhood. She had had to spend more on her car this year than ever before, and it cost her money for repairs every time she took it over the Day’s Bay Road. It was decided to forward the letter to the Hutt County Council. The Plimmerton Ratepayers’ Association wrote asking for the erection of several notice boards in Plimmerton requesting motorists to go slow at various points. The committee is asking for a list of the boards desired, and inquiring whether the association is prepared to assist in their ejection. In response to ' nother request, school warning signs are to le supplied for erection at Paehakariki. '
A grant of £3 3s. was made towards the £25 required to improve the corner from the main road into the side street leading to the Hutt Golf Club’s links. When the corner has been improved a memorial tablet is to bo erected by the Hutt Golf Club to the men who fell in the fighting with the Maoris at this locality in the very early days. Permission having been given by the Railway Department for the erection of a signboard on the pier of the railway bridge on the Hutt ’oad, it was decided to put this board up at once. It will provide information as to road blockages on the Rimutaka Hill, Manawatu Gorge, etc. ( The Road Sub-committee reported having a considerable number of read signs ready, and arrangements for their erection were authorised. Mr. G. A. Adams, of Paraparaumu, asked for support in connection with a new road which local land-owners propose to make from Paekakariki to Paraparaumu to open up land adjoining the coast. The writer suggested that this should be developed as the main road in lieu of the present unsatisfactory swamp road. As the District Highways Council will shortly be going into the question of local roads consideration of the matter was deferred. The Hutt County Council wrote declining the club’s offer of £5O towards the cost of an engineer’s report on surfacing its roads, and stated that it was securing a report free of charge from Mr. C. Skitrop, consulting engineer to the Union Asphalt Compaiy. Menibers of the committee expressed a hc]Hi that this would lead to definite action bv the Hutt County Council. Twenty-five new members were elected, and the secretary announced that within the last few weeks a group of eight members had been secured in Eltham. It was decided <o write to the Elthani members inquiring as to the possibility of forming a branch there. A bank credit of £432 was reported, but some concern was expressed at the large amount of members’ subscriptions outstanding, £223. It was dreided to put a collector on at once to clean up as much as possible of the aiTcars before tho end of the financial year. Progress in connection with the forthcoming W.A.C. Year Book was reported, and it was resolved that the issue of free copies of the year book be confined to members who are financial.
