THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS By Glbncoh. The Pahiatua meeting will take , place to-day. There is a card of eight events, and racing will commence with the Maiden race, six furlongs. Red Cherry, having won at Awapuni, is not eligible to start, and in her absence favouritism may bo divided between the Trentham trained Rose de Vai and Menthe. The firstnamed galloped well before leaving home. Olynthus, who has not been raced for some time, is due to appear in the Hack Welter Handicap. The chestnut gelding is not meeting a very strong field, but he may want a race before he is back to form. Rimutaka has been racing consistently of lath, and, with the aid of the apprentice allowance, he may be able to lead the field. Several of the acceptors for the Hack Flying Handicap have earned penalties by winning during the holiday meetings. They are Hytinus, Debate, Morrimas, and Ihapotoa. The form of the last-named at Marton, where ho won in better company than he will meet to-day, was impressive, and with such a big pull in the weights he may he first choice to-day. For the Pahiatua Handicap, Cleasanta and Bitters have earned 51b. penalties. Tho first-named raced well during the holidays, and, as she seems at her best now, she may be well fancied to-day. Dissertation ran well on on© day at Awapuni, but badly at Marton. If she has freshened up since the latter meeting, she may be the most difficult for Cleasanta to shake off at the finish. If L’Amour is anything near his l>est he should have an easy task in th© Kdnini Hack Handicap, seven furlongs. Tongatotoa will be troubled by the distance, and Bonomel will have to put up a penalty of 101b.' for winning at Tauherenikau. Hytinus, Debate, and Merrimas are tho penalised ones in tho Makuri Hack Handicap, five furlongs. Pillage failed rather badly at Ellerslie, and a turn may bo on hand for the hitherto unlucky Eonmark, who will have the services of A. Oliver. Eonmark has filled minor places in his last three starts. A good field, which includes several winners at recent meetings, is down to compete in the President’s Handicap, six furlongs. Ambitious will put up 51b., and Prince Hal, a dual winner at Tauherenikau, a stone. This should assist to make a good race. The light-weight Mountain March was fancied at the Wairarapa meeting, but. failed. She may have needed the race nnd should go better to-day. Last year the mare in question won five times and was placed second several times.

Racing will conclude with the Hack Welter Handicap, seven furlongs. They are a very poor lot engaged, but Sweet Song goes fairly well over this distance.

Songbird is to fulfil his engagements at Trentham, says our Christchurch correspondent. The Kilbroney four-year-old looks well after his holidav racing.

R. Emerson will probably take Boadicea to Trentham. She is now going along freely in her work. ,

Tho two-year-old colt Gamester will not he sent to Trentham. He is rrcovering from a slight cold, and should be all right for the meetings at Riccarton and Wingatui next month. 'The trotter Nelson Bell is well forward in condition, and is trotting in great style in his work at Addington. He will be raced at Wellington on Saturday.

RICCARTON TRACK NOTES BY TELEGRAPH—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. Christchurch, January 9. At Riccarton to-day, Glentruin, who looks bright and well, trotted round the middle course, after which she did steady pace work on the plough. This mare may not start in the Telegraph Handicap at Wellington. F. D. Jones is waiting for instructions as to whether he is to accept for her or not. Wink, who shows signs of having lieen entangled in a fence, was given trotting exercise, and Palestrina was sent twico round, once at half-pace and next at nearly three-quarters. W. Hobbs leaves for Trentham with Wink and Palestrina on Thursday. Palestrina will be ridden by P. Keene in tho Wellington Cup. Murihaupo sprinted three furlongs in 37sec., a distance it took Economist 45sec. to run. Economist was tied up all over after working, and ho is a doubtful competitor at the Wellington meeting.
