The English cricketers opened a two-dav match against a combined team from Ashburton, South Canterbury, and North Otago centres at Teniuka to-day. Tho weather in the forenoon was beautifully fine, but about 3 o’clock a cold, wet change blew up, making the wicket difficult. The local men baited.first, but made an indifferent stand against the bowling of Chapman, Tyldesley, and HillWood, and all were dismissed for 52 in ninety minutes. The Englishmen gave a bright, crisp display with the bat, passing the combined team’s total in .twenty minutes. Brand, who was highest scorer with 85, scored all round the wicket, though he gave a difficult chance in tho outfield when his score was about 40. He hit a dozen boundaries and one 6. Lowry hit off 48 in 30 minutes, including six boundaries and one sixer. Most of the Englishmen displayed clever playing, ana few faulty strokes were seen, though the field work of the combined team was very fine, the visitors in this respect not having an opportunity to show their capabilities. lac Lean, the wicketkeeper, was responsible for three wickets through the local batsmen running out to the slow deliveries of Hill-Wood and Tvldesley.
