An enormous eel (says the “Nelson Evening Mail”) has been caught in the Maitai River, near Almond Tree Flat, by two boys sained Hawke and Hobbs. A hook-stick was used, and the boys had an exciting time before the eeel wn-s landed. Hobbs hooked, it in the tail, and the strength of the fish was so great that it threw the boy into the river. Hawke cume to Iris companion's assistance, and together thev landed theor catch after about a fifty yards’ run. The eel turned the scale at 271 b, is sft. long, and over 16 inches in girth.
Regarding the statement made up north recently by Colonel Bell M.P., that liquor for sale in the public bars Is not tested, a New Plymouth hotelkeeper informs the “News” that the statement is misleading, as the police have tlie power to inspect nt any time liquor exposed for sale. He savs also that the inspector under the Health and Foods Act priodically makes an inspection, so that the public are absolutely safeguarded in respect of the quality of liquor sold to them.
