TOWN AND COUNTRY NOTES FROM OUB OWN COBBESPONDBNT. Palmerston North, March 29. So successful have been the four buses procured by the Palmerston North Borough Council about six months ago that it has been decided to purchase two more of these useful public conveyances. They will have locally-built bodies, the price complete being £1535 each. The new conveyances will be somewhat lighter than the present buses, and will not carry quite so many passengers, but they will bo very useful for special trips, also to take.tho place of any of the other buses which may have to be laid up for repairs. Carrying Cream on the Railways. Recently it was notified that the Railway Department had decided to make a charge ■of 3d. per can for loading cream in cases where the consignor did not himself put it on the train, and the matter was brought up at a meeting of the Farmers’ Union tho other day. It was pointed out that where trains ran irregularly it was often impossible for a consignor living some distance, from the line to as often as not the ordinary train time did not cuit him.‘ In these cases the tins were left at country sidings and then the charge was made. ItT was mentioned that loading the cream was not a difficult matter, and that no facilities for the work were provided by the Department, as was done in the case of produce. It was resolved to make representations to the Department with the object ot having the charge removed. . Slaughtering 7 Pigs. A special report of the Abattoirs Committee to the Palmerston North Borough Council drew attention to the very large number of pigs now being slaughtered at the municipal abattoirs, and urged the necessity of extending the works. Bacon factories which had been killing at the abattoirs wore to be approached with the object of getting a guarantee of about ten thousand pigs per annum provided, the facilities were extended, and if this were forthcoming it was suggested that the council should proceed with tho woik. In anv case it would be necessaiy lor the council to find some £2OOO or £2500 in order to carry out absolutely essential work in connection with the ordinary beef and mutton killing operations. The committee added that tho ordinary work of the abattoirs had so outgrown the capacity for the plant that it was impossible to carry on as at present for another year,. and it would also be necessary to install a naw drier and additional stock liens, eft. The matter was held over until a reply was received from the bacon companies concerned. Postal Department and Borough Council. For some time past correspondence has been going on between the Palmerston North Borough Council and tho Postal Department, which has objected to paying a rate of Is. 6d. per 1000 gallons for water used by the local Post Office. The Department also objected to paying for the iemoval of rubbish from file, post office. When the matter was discussed by tne Borough Council it was pointed out that the Department had taken up the same attitude in Wanganui and that the council there had absolutely refused to remove anv more rubbish witlioub payment. The council decided to notify the Department that it must pay Is. 6d. per 1000 gallons forall water used, and that in future i» must remove its own rubbish.
