TRENTHAM RACES

THOMPSON HANDICAP WON BY PRINTEMPS GLOAMING SCORES IN THE STAKES THE ST. LEGER TO KICK OFF The autumn meeting; of the Wellington Racing Club opened in perfect Weather. There was a good attendance of the public, and some fine racing was witnessed. . Visiting sportsmen were not so prominent as in previous years. There were three stipendiaries preseat, but their tanlts werv of the lightest description. The. machine put through £39,110 10s., as against £56,928 for the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £17,817 10s. Secretary A. E. Whyte and his assistant Mr. J. M. Griffiths had everything in smooth Working order, and the events were got off well to time. The St. Leger proved a good thing for Mr. J. S. McLeod’s All Black gelding Kick-Off. Pluto, the favourite, raced very sour, and was never going like 'a winner. The Thompson Handicap went to the locally-owned Printemps, after a good finish. Silver Peak, the runner-up, did not have the best of luck, as she was not in the “call” until the last furlong, and Gasbag was compelled to cover a bit. of extra ground on the turn. Anomaly ran badly, and on that form it does not look worth while taking him to Riccarton. Bairnsdale was./ the only scratching in the High Weight Handicap, leaving thirteen runners. Grim Joke was a good favourite, ’and he had 'every chance, but could not get a place. Wamba and Rimutaka 'wet a fast pace, and led the favourite into the straight. Eerie then took charge, and won comfortably from Blue Hall and Active. The favourite was fourth, and then came Maniahera and Alteration. The latter came from a long way back, and will bo improved by the race. _ , -Only three horses faced the barrier in the St. Leger. Cleasanta' did not look ready,' but no fault could be found with the condition of the other pair. Pluto wad a better favourite than Kick-Off. At the- start, Cleasanta took charge, and passing the stand she led the other pair by four lengths. Going out-of the straight the leader put a break on the field, and down the back sho was twenty lengths clear of Kick-Off, Pluto being three lengths further back. The leader tired entering the straight, and Kick-Off ran to her comfortably. Pluto tried to come on, but could mt ke no impression on Kick-Off, who won' comfortably by half z a dozen lengths. Pluto had to be hard ridden to beat Cleasanta. The win was well received, and after weighing in the gelding was decorated with the red ribbon by Miss Harcourt, daughter tof the president of) the club. Gold Light was the best I backed in the Plunket Nursery Handicap, several of the others being in the market. After the' start the whole field ran in a line to the turn for homo, where Gold Light hung out. Lucius and Zany were first into the straight. A' furlong from hums Rapine took charge, and the favourite also challenged. In a good finish Rapine won by a bare half length from Gold Light, with Lucius- a length away. Thencame King’s Trumpeter, Moorland, and Vogue. When the numbers were hoisted for the Thompson Handicap, Songbird and Sunny Corner were; njissing ; 1 In the birdcage the field all stripped well, 'and opinions were very divided as to the result. When the machine closed, Anomaly was a bettor favourite than Askari, with Insurrection and Silver Peak next in order. The field was dispatched well to time, and Blackmail immediately took charge irom Gasbag, Quest, Anomaly, and Printemps. At the half-mile Anomaly was nearest to the leader, and he joined her at the straight entrance. Two furlongs from home Gasbag was with the other pair, and Marqueteur got up on the insidy. Printemps then shat out, and Gasbag was nearest to him) Inside the distance Silver Peak put in A run on the outside. A great race to the post saw Printemps win by a neck from Silver Peak, with Gasbag a head away. Marqueteur wa s right up in fourth place, and then came Trespass and Blackmail, the last to finish being Askari and Aureate and Martial Dawn. The race was very cleanly run, thanks to the fast pace set. Only Rational and Ares opposes! Gloaming in the Cl allenge Stakes. The champion jumped >ut in front, while Rational, lost several lengths at the barrier.' The latter soon joined Gloaming, but the son of The Welkin was not headed, and he won easily, while Rational only headed Ares in the last stride. Several o fthe runners in the Silver stream Handicap were well backed. The race needs little description, for Petunia took charge at the barrier' rise, and led all the way, winning bv four lengths from Prince Hal, with Five-Eighths two lengths away, followed by Redlogue and Liqueur. Good Mark showed pace for six furlongs, but then closed up. The stewards decided to allow the riders to use whips and spurs, as the programme had been published before the new condition was suggested. Absurdum, Roseday, 'and Astinome were the defections from the Railway Handicap, Still Sea being a good favourite. Bon Spec and Mireusonta led a bunched field on to the course proper, where Still Sea tried for an opening on the ins’de, but he could not quite get up. Bon Spec fell back after half a mile, and Grotesque put in a run, hut Mimnsontn tnni~te’.necl his advantage, .and 'won by half a length from Still Sua. Grotesque was a length away in third place, and then came Birkie. The Chokeboro renresentative Red Hind was the best backed in the big field that contested the Tinakori Handicap, Merry Day, Danger Zone, and All Cerise all carrying over four figures. The field was bunched on to the course proper, where ' Red Hind was showing the way to Danger Zone and Landbird. Over the last furlong Merry Day joined in, and a great race to the post saw Red Hind win bv a neck from Merry Day, who beat Danger Zone by the same distance. Landbird wns fourth. cd, In. oases of th! ssort. if each member DETAILED RESULTS. FIRST HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, of 350 sovs. One mile and a quarter. Mr. J. Harle’s ch. f. A JOCKEY’S APPEAL DISMISSED The judges of the New Zealand Racing Conference, (Sir George Clifford Sir Wm. HerrCies, and Mr. P. Miller), have given their decision in appeal by C. Stophens, jockey, against the decision of the Wanagnui District Committee in deciding that he was guilty of a breach of Rule 1, Part XXV., of the Rules of Racing, and increasing the penalty of three months suspension imposed upon hi mby the Marton Jockey Club to suspension for six months as from January 3, 1922. In their judgment the judges state that they do not feel justified in over; ruling the decision of the Wanganui District Committee, in view of the unanimous finding of the judicial committee of the' Marton Jockey Club, who had every opportunity of coming to a correct conclusion, on facts which occurred under their personal observation. They therefore dismissed the appeal.

A reminder is given that acceptances for the Manawatu meeung eiose to-nigKt. At the Lower Hutt at 2.45 p.m. today, Mr. Eric Riddiford will dispose of a lot of thoroughbred, stock, including the brood mare Chakwana, a successful performer. She has a filly at foot by Absurd, and is also stinted to Catmint. There should be some competition for the Martian mares, Talitha (sister to Thrax and Judith) and Madam Butterfly (sister to Tannhauser, etc). Both are stinted to Absurd. .Chakwana is also represented by a yearling sister to Kilwana and Talitha by a yearling filly by Nassau. The latter is a first foal. The tbreo-year-old geldings Nym (Bardolph—Ring Rose) and Scion (Boniform —Lady Jean II.) complete the catalogue.'
