TOTALISATOR PERMITS

REPORT OF THE COMMISSION MEMBERS MEET BUT DISAGREE The House of Representatives is not yet to be, given the opportunity of considering the report of the Totalisator Commission. Sir George Hunter (Waipawa) asked the Prime Minister yesterday when the Order-in-Council giving effect to the recommendations would be brought before Parliament. Mr. Massey said that he was not yet in a position to inform the House when the Order-in-Council would be laid 1 on the table. That would happen at a very early date, however. The reason for the delay was that since returning to Wellington last Tuesday he had had so much to occupy his attention, urgent matters giving him as much as he could do. Dr. Thacker: You ought to have a rest. Mr. Massey, while thanking Dr. Thacker, said that he did not need a rest. Ho would look into this matter, and hoped to be able to make an announcement about it on. Tuesday or Wednesday. Ho hoped to give the House reasonable notice of when the matter would be up for discussion. The Government would give tho House every opjjortunity to discuss the proposals, and to arrive, lie hoped, at sonic satisfactory conclusion. Report Informally Discussed. A. meeting of members convened :by Sir George Hunter wns held yesterday morning to discuss . the report of the Racing Commission. About forty members, representing all .lections of the House, attended. The convener stated afterwards that the meeting had had a very friendlv discussion. Those present ?7il’ into three categories: those who were in favour of accepting the whole report; those who were in favour of rejecting it; and those who were in favour of a compromise which would result in tiie retention of what they considered good and the rejection of what they,, con. sidered the reverse. The meeting could not reach a unanimous decision, and came to an end without carrying any resolution. Those members who favoured a compromise remained and engaged in further discussion. It was decided to hold a further meeting later, and possibly representations will be made to the Prime Minister as a result.
