A BRILLIANT RECORD

PONEKE FOOTBALL CLUB’S REUNION

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION Established in 1883, ths Poneke Football Club has long been a power in the local Rugby world. The club's colours have always had a strong following of supporters, several hundred of whom were in attendance at the club’s annual smoke concert, which was held last evening. The function took place at tho Alasonic Hall, and it passed off very successfully. Mr. A. Wiren, a life-long supporter of the club, was in the chair, and among those present were Air. J. Prendeville (chairman of the Wellington Rugby Union), Mr. A. C. Kitto, and Mr. D. M'Kenzie (.Referees/ Association), Mr. S. S. Dean (New Zealand Rugby Union), and three life-members of the club— Messrs. W. J. Wallace the famous ex- “ All Black”), Wi Hood, and C. AHtchell. In proposing the toast “Poneke Club," the chairman congratulated members on annexing the 1921 championship, and pointed out that it was not by any means the first time they had captured the blue ribband in Wellington football. Mr. Wiren also mentioned that the club had won the National Mutual Cup, while the seventh A grade fifteen won their competition, and the fourth, fifth, and sixth-class teams were runners-up in their respective divisions. It was, he remarked, a record to be proud of, and it proved that the Poneke colours had lost none of their old-time glory. Response was made by the club-captain, Mr. U. P. Calcinai, who in turn toasted the “N.Z.R.U.," response being made in this instance by Mr. G. W. Slade. Other toasts included “Wellington Rugby Union,” proposed by Mr. Dean and replied to by Afr. Prendeville; and “Kintired Sports," proposed by Mr. D. Al'Kenzie, and responded to by Mr. W. Hood. The toast list was interspersed with an acceptable programme of musical items. The Club's Record.
