NEW ZEALAND CUP SCRATCHINGS. , By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, October 7. Big Chief and Athens II were scratched for the New Zealand Cup at 7.25 p.m. NOTES AND COMMENTS By Glencoe. The Australian Jockey Club’s spring meeting will bo concluded at Bandwick to-day. Veil’s failure in tho Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick was a big disappointment to New Zealand sportsmen. It was given out that Rational’s sister was something out of the ordinary, and R. J. Mason was very confident of her. When the Sydney papers como to hand it may bo found that Veil was unlucky in her races. Mr. R. B. Lusk, of Auckland, has been appointed to the. position of judge to ths Wellington Racing Club. There were half-a-dozen applications for the position A petition is being signed at Hastings asking the Accident Bund Trustees to make a grant to the mother of tho lata Roy Manson, who died recently at Auckland. Loyal Arch is being kept going at Wanganui. Her next public appearance will be at tho November meeting at Ellerslie It has been decided that Lfstowel and Thespian will contest the Champion Plato at Trantham, after which they will be railed north for tho Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting. The well-known trainer, J. Young, is nt present an inmate of the Wanganui Hospital, where he was operated on this week for an internal trouble. A newcomer on the Wanganui tracks is the big chestnut gelding Hindi, a fullbrother to the New Zealand Cup winner, Indigo. Hindi is now owned by Mr. JMarshall, who will prepare him for racing. The Wanganui horseman, E. Copestake, is still carrying his arm in a sling as the result of his fall off Marconi at Avondale. He hopes to bo well enough to ride at the Waverley meeting this month,, and he will then go on to Ellerslie for the November meeting. Tho three-year-old Lord Martian, who raced unsuccessfully in Sydney, died at' Trantham on Thursday after undergoing An operation. Lord Martian was owned by Mr. A. J. Toxward, of Akitio. Tho Blenheim-ow,ncd Maritsa (Martian —Snowlike), whom it is thought will be able to get a 1-1.1 certificate in. Sydney, ■was shipped by the Manuka this week. Maritsa is a four-year-old, and though she has shown a lot of paco in her races shp is still a maiden. A pony by Autumnus from Levapt that is intended for racing in. Beauford, who won the Epsom Handicap last Saturday, started a hot favour iie, and had been at a very short price since he won a six-furlongs handicap at Randwick early in September and a mile race nt.
