THE QUESTION OF A LICENSE j AMERICAN GOVERNMENT’S PROTEST Mention was made last week of the fact that the Acting-Prime Minister (Sir Francis Doll) h-ad received a turtner communication from the United States Consul-General conveying a protest from. tho American Government regarding tho refusal of the New Zealand Government to issue a meat export license to Armour and Company of Australasia. The com-, munication asked for certain information. An official reply has been sent to the Consul-General indicating that .in the opinion of the New Zealand Government this method of communication between Washington and Wellington is not in accord with constitutional usage. Tho New. Zealand Government is willing to place information at tho disposal of tha Con-sul-General. But communications from the United States Government to tha Dominion authorities ought to go first to the Foreign Office in London for transmission to New Zealand through the regular channels. The United States Government, it op-. pearo, is disposed to press for ation of the decision regarding Armour and Company, who at present are to ship some 300,009 carcasses owned by them in New Zealand cold stores, the Dominion Government has refused to . issue a meat export license on the ground that the company, although registered in New Zealand, is using American capital and is in effect a branch of' Armour arid tec’TrtieV The autho s itie L tß t in various parts of the world.
