The Canastota is now considerably overduo on her voyage from Sydney to Wellington. Mr. George A. Parkes, the Sydney agent for the vessel, considers it unlikely that tho vessel has been lost through an explosion of her cargo of naphtha and benzine. -Vapourised benzine or naphtha* said Mr. Parkes, “is heavier than air, and would sink to the bottom of the hold, where no light would be likely to come in contact with it. All the volatile cargo was stowed well away from the stokehold, and it is scarcely possible that an explosion originated from the contact of vapour with the shin’s lines. It has been suggestred,” ho continued, “that Btowawiiys have hidden in the hold, and matches to find their way out when the vessel had gone tx> sea, so causing an explosion. We have, however, no reason to suspect that such wiw the case. It Is quite possible that the Canastota has broken her tail-shaft or her main cranKshaft, and is drifting out of control.
