BOROUGH OF PETONE
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Petone Borough Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Elwan) presiding. There were also present: Councillors C. P. Brockelbank. M. Ford, J. L. Churchouse, R. H’. Jones, W. Hay, A. Anderson, D. S. Bedingfield, G. Cook, and R. A. Hartley. A communication was received from the Valuer-General advising that as the council’s officere had supplied the values of new buildings and of additions to existing buildings, the cost Of such work would not form part of the cost of upkeep of the district rolls, and that the annual charge would be less than if tho valuation had been made bv the .Department. The deputy-housing superintendent wrote stating that the Department had arranged to erect dwellings on all the vacant sections in the borough where the sewerage system was already installed, and at the same time Imd arranged’ a contract for six additional dwellings fronting a street which ihe sewer had not yet reached. It was hoped that the Department would shortly be able to proceed with the houses on tho vacant sections along the front of which the sowerage system passed.
The Upper Hutt Town Board advised that favourable replies had been received from various local bodies which had appointed, or agreed to appoint, delegates to a conference if was proposed to , hold for the purpose of discussing the I formation of a power board in connoc- • lion with the Mangshao scheme. The i data of tlio conference had not yet been I fired, Advice was received from tho secretary ; of tho Petone Fire Board that the board was in possession of a report from the ' Government inspector of flle brigades, in ■ which reference was made to the inefficiency of the water supply for fire extinguishing purposes- The board drew the attention of the council to tho post* ' tioi> ■ -No action was taken.
The Taita C'lynctery Board intimated that it wished to confer with delegates from tho Hutt County Council and Hutt and Petone Borough Councils on July 20. The business lieing of an important nature, it was hoped that the council would appoint three delegates. 'I h-> Mayo’ - was appointed to renrrsent the council at the conference.
