TWO DUNEDIN INQUESTS

An inquest was held to-day concerning the death of a ten-weeks-old child named Gavin Stuart Buchanan at Port Chalmers The coroner’s verdict was that death was duo to suffocation through having been accidentally overlain by Hie •nother. . During tho course of an urgent operation for diphtheria at the Dunedin hospital the death occurred of James Shaw, five vears of age, whose I’nrante reside in AVoodhaugh Street, Maori Hill. At .an inquest to-day the coroner said that the evidence showed that at the t une Dr. Lindon saw-the child its condition was acute, and immediate steps had to be taken to give the child a chance for life It was unfortunate that the doctor did ’not see tho child earlier, but that had been explained. The mother was evidently misled as to the child s condition, but once its condition was appreciated everything possible was done Tho rerdiet would be that death was due to heart failure following laryngeal diph'horia while undergoing a necessary operation and that all proper medical skill was used during the operation.
