At Manchester to-day the Australian cricket team commenced their match against Lancashire. The weather wa« dull and breezy, but there was a larga attendance, over 12,000. • The wicket waa in perfect order. The following represented Lancashire; —M. N. Kenyon, J. Sharp, J. R. Barnes, J. Hallows, James Tyldesley, Richard Tyldesley, L. Cook, W. Ellis, F. Watson,. C. Parkin, and Whewell. Ernest Tyldesley and Makepeace were unable to play owing to injuries. Armstrong, Oldfield, Andrews, and Mayne were omitted from the Australian team. Kenyon won the toss, and sent in Hallows and Barnes to face M'Donald and Gregory. Both batsmen were steady, but when eleven runs had been scored Mailey, at second slip, held one from.' Barnes off Gregory. Ono for 11. The fielding was good, and Andrews was prominent at third man. Sharp came in, and off the' eighth over he drove M’Donald straight to the boundary, and was applauded for the first four of the match. Both bowlers were causing the ball to rise from the pitch, those from Gregory being often seven feet high. Sharp just looked on, to the amusement of the crowd. Hendry replaced M'Donald at 23, which had taken 40 minutes to obtain. Sharpdrove the second ball from M'Donald, a long-hop, straight for four. When he reached double figures he was caught by Carter off Gregory. Three for 34. Ellis came in, only to see Hallows go without an alteration to the score, Carter accepting a catch off Hendry.
