MR. HUGHES UNABLE TO ATTEND. London, July 5. Mr. Hughes was visited by the French Ambassador to-day, who desired to know when it would be convenient for tiio Federal Primo Minister to visit: the Somme area, and to e.xuress the nation's regrets that he is unable to participate in the national celebrations and commemorations next week. Tho Ambassador also intimated that the French Government desired io discussvimattors of commerce, especially in relation to tho tariff. He expressed some doubt whether the matter should be approached through Britain, but Mr. Hughes quickly disillusioned him. saying tho matter was entirely Australian.
