SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

A successful dance was held in • tho Ponsunby Hall on Monday night. Tho hall was prettily decorated with lycopodium and gay with coloured streamers. It was a young people's dance, Mesdames Carter, Bennett, and M'Gregor acting as chaperons. Tho Misses Trance, Carter, and Bennett, acting with Messrs Hellish, Sohloss, and Ginders : formed tho committee. The music was delightful, and the flcor perfect for dancing. The dresses wore charming, the predominating colours being pale blue and pink, with here and there an Arresting contrast, such as tomato and jade green. Th, supper was excellently supervised. More than a hundred were present, aiid tho youthfuul co:nmitteo worked unselfishly, taking care Hint everyone had a partner. Altogether it was a great success, and everybody went homo highly pleased and satisfied. ■ •

During the week tho, patients and staff at the Trentham Military Hospital were given a concert by Miss Price, under the auspices of the Y.M.C.A., for A Block, drives in thij Bed Cross and Salvation Army cars, pictures, by the Y.M.C.A., and an entertainment in the Red Cross Club. The following gifts are acknowledged -with thanks-.—Wellington Red Cross, daily- papers, cake, fruit, smokes, sweets, flowers; Salvation Army, fruit, cake, sweets; Citizens' Fund (per Mrs. Luke), fruit.

"Charloy's Aunt" Club. The final social evening of the year in connection wi,th "Charley's Club was held at tho Masonic Hull, Boulcott Street, last Thursday. The feature of tho evening was a> presentation of a silver vase of beautiful tulips to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Russell on the occasion of their recent marriage, as a mark of esteem from the club. There was an excellent programme, and supper ivas provided The president of the. club, Mr. Marcus Marks, was in the chair. Amongst tho large audience were tho Hon. W. Earnshaw and Mrs. Earnshaw, Mr. Relief, M.P., and Mrs. Kellot, Mr. J. Hislop,. M.V.0., and Mrs Hislop, Mr. and Mrs. M. Can-, Mr. and Mrs. Atnck, Mr. Stanley Warwick (judge at competitions), Mr. and Mrs. Brownjohn, Mr. Eootham (a visitor from England), Mr. Petrie'(secretary Orphans' Club), Mr. E. K' Lyon (secretary Savage Club), and Mr. Fraser Thompson, of the Orphans' Club'.' Olympic Harriers' Evening, " The' Olympic Harriers arid' Amateur Athletic Club's season was brought to a close with an enjoyable social gathering, held in the. New Century Hall, Kent Terrace. There was a, large gathering, of members and friends, and during the evening the prizes and trophies worn; in various events were presented by; Councillor W. 11. Bennett. In the course' of his remarks, Councillor Bennett spoke of cross-country running as one of the cleanest of sports, and not a selfish one. He hoped that during the recess mombers would reinforce their ranks with fresh recruits. Complimentary remarks were also mado by Mr. W. H Plulp, president of the club, Mr. T. 11. Wilson and Mr. A. Davies representing tho N.Z.A.A. Association, the last-named making special reference to Mr. F, Hodgson, who had don© excellent work in tho interests of amateur athletic sport The prize-winners were as. follow :— Byrne Memorial Cup (presented by members of the New Zealand Div. Signallers in memory of the late Corporals J. F. Byrne, C. A. Byrne, and V. J. Byrne), G. Nelson; Wilson Memorial Cup (presented by Sergeant-Major H. G. Wilson, M.M., in memory of his brother, Corporal J. A Wilson, M.M.), J". C. Beagleholo; novice race. W; Wilkinson 1, K. Beaglehole 2; sealed handicap (three miles), G. Nelson 1, J. Perston 2; sealed handicap (in connection with club championship), T. Wilscn i consolation race, A. Trocey 1, K. F. Osborne 2; run-in trophy, J. Perston; most improved novice, L E. Lovell; sports meeting prizes, J. Perston 1, E. A. Selman and R; F. Osborne, equal, 2; attendance medalg, H. G. T. Jeffory, E. A. Selman, N. Carwell-Cooke, L. E. Lovell, J. W Scatchard, A. F. Workman, and W. G. AVilkinson. A trophy for the member bringing tho greatest number <3 new members into the clu'b was won by H; F. Osborne. The club championship was wen by W. Scatchard, Dancing provided much enjoymant, tho music being supplied by Mr. H. Whiteman.

Fancy Dress Dance. " ..•■'••■ The Berks of monthly dunces arranged by the residents of Day's Bay at the pavilion during the winter months whs brought to a close with a plain and fancy dress ball on Saturday evening last, the gathering being un entire success. Somo of the costumes were very effective, notably that worn, by Mrs. Hardwick (Old English), Miss James (Russian dancer), and Miss Ima Dawson (Egyptian). Amongst others were noticed Mrs. Gibson (milkmaid) and her husband (as a Presbyterian minister). The Misses Norrie and Colleen Rayward looked very charming in blue and pink frocks: Mrs/Hay was in black and white; Mrs. Goss, rose pink and gold; Mrs. Keenan, violet silk; Mrs. Little, blue crepe de chine.
