HEREFORD CATTLE

A RECORD SALE. 1000 GUINEAS FOp. YEARLING BULL. That Hereford cattle are still holding n very high position in tho estimation of breeders is evident from the results of Mr. Frank Moore's Bushy Park Sale recently held at Wanganui. The total gross proceeds from 91 lots of snid c«ttle reached 6455 guineas, being an average price of over 71 guineas per head. Averages for the various cUsbm sold were as under:—27 stud cows, 53 2/27 guineas per head; 17 stud heifer ailves.Jia 12/17 guineas per head; 3 stud bull calves, S3 2/3 guineas per head; 9 stud 2yr. heifer?, 95 5/9 guineas per head; It stud yearling heifers, 80 guineas per head; 6 older stud bulls, 80 1/6 guineas per head; 11 ywrliufj stud bulls, XSi 1/7 guineas per head; 4 2yr. stud bulls, 68i guineas per head; ,tj yearling run bulls, 2Z guineas per head. The yearling stud bull "Hoyol Navy," by "Hansel Jack Tar" (imp.) from "Park Besnl 2nd," was purchased by Mr. E. Al. liiiK'iunson, or Uaihulci, Poverty -Bay. at ihe record price of WOO guinea* When it is remembered that this sale was not a dispersal, but merely a suvplus one, and that even so the above figures easily constitute ail Australasian record, it must be admitted that ll.« great white-faced cattle are going ahead. Of great interest, too, is the wonderful record of the imported bull "Rufus," "milProceeds from cattle by "Rufus." sold at this sale JQ2.G9O 2 0 Plus prico obtained for him .£367 10 0 I'lus previous proceeds from 42 bulls by him J!G,525 15 0 £9.5(3''7 (I And there are still in the Bushy Park Herd 32 females, 11 bull calves, and :■> older bulls by hiin. Mr. Frank Moore, the well-known breeder, of Bushy Park, Kai Iwi', nesi Wangnnui, is emphatic in his opinion that the standard' of quality must be kept up, that being the only_ way to maintain the hie;h position whidi Heiefords have justly gained in the cattle world. There is a strong temptation to keep an inferior animal knowing that it will probably suit ■ someone' who wants a cheap bull. "By the distribution of several lnrgo studs recently." says Mr. Moore, "a number of new breeders have entered tho field, and I think it is of the u'most importance that we should all clearly realise that our future success depends entirely on our determination to keep only the host. Unless we do this our success will merely be temporary."— (Published-by arrangement.)
