Davies left Wellington. | WELLINGTON SOUTH CLUB. The annual championship tourney of tins abovo club, which commences on Thursday evening, is open, to all members who care to take part (instead of being restricted- to the eight strongest players, as on previous occasions). The competitors are to lie divided into two Sections—those who hold "odd rungs" on tlio ladder forming Section A, while the '"even rungs" constitute Section B. r ' ho two section winners are to play a match of three panics to decide the club chaip-, pionship (which at present is held by Mr. D.. Jhirchas). Entries are coming in very freely, from which it would /.ppMi' that the new conditions are popular with tlio members. ■ v NGAIO CLUB. Tlie club's championship tourney, which was commenced about two mouths ag:>, attracted ejfven entries, viz., Messrs. .I'd me?, G. Jones, E. E. Hicks, .1. Lindsay, F. J., Breaker, IV. J. Carman, and A. B. 'J'opp. The play has been of a verv stubborn nature, and a number of games stand adjourned awaiting either a second or a third sitting.' A very close finish is looked for, as 'it's still possible for any one of the competitors to ami-;* the cliampionship. PROBLEM-SOLVING CONTEST. The Good Companion Chess Problem Club of America is once more holding a world-wide,' problem-solving contest on 'George Washington's birthday (February 22). As this falls on a Sunday, the contest is beinjr arranged for February 23. Sheets containing the twelve two-move problems to be tackled have Veil s>'-nt from headquarters in America to confidential agents in all parts of the wovld. The New Zealand vice-presidents of the Good Coroiwuion Club are Messrs. L. I). Coombs (Dunedin) and C. W. Tanner (Wellington). The New Zealand contests will probably bo held in the tour chief centres, 21 hours being allowed for '.lie solving There are, so far, ten entries for the local competition, which commences at 8 p.m. on Monday next at 52 Cuba Street, tlje Wellington Chess Club having granted the use of its room end material for the occasion. There nre five ixiok prizes for the meat successful solvers.
