"AN EXEMPLAR? SENTENCE "
Sir,—As a father of a little girl aged 8J years, tho same age as the child indecently assaulted in the Auckland district, I would ask all readers of this paper who are. also parents of yountf children if they consider tho sentence of five years imposed 011 the prisoner, and reported in your issue of May 22, an exemplary sentence? I certainly do not. I further note that the Judge, while admitting tho' possession of power to administer a flogging, did not do so, saying that Judges are naturally reluctant to administer such a brutalisuig punishment. I had to read this over several times iu case ir.y Bight might bo failing suddenly. Why "naturally reluctant/' and why "brutalising ? It almost makes one wish .that the next case of this kind will be a Judges child, then perhaps the long-promised flogging would eventuate. . I supposa this prisoner will get a fairly pleasant five years tree-planting, etc., ana will bo ready for another little victim at the end of his time. Personally, J would advocate capital punishment for this crime.—l am, etc.,
