MR. CLUTTON-BROCK AND EMINENT MEN
Mr A. CHutton-Krock, writing on "Eminent Men: A Warning,'' in tho "Manchester Guardian," says:— "I have met eminent men who seemed to think if. their duly to display all their parlour tricks as soon .'.s possible. While thev were doing so their conversation was wearisome—one knew how each sentence, would end as soon as it was begun—but in about ten minutes, when the display who over, thev forgot their eminence, and talked about the weather like anyone else, only better. Then it became possible to enjoy their society. But there are others who can never forget their eminence or allow you to forget it. In company they are no longer, persons, but institutions. So I would warn the wives of eminent men lo treat their husbands as .if they were not eminent, if they wish them to remain so. Ko human being ever wins security in this life; no matter how brilliant or amusing you have been in the past, there remains a danger that you will become a bore if vou try lo live Ml your past. if yon keep on saying what you think is expected of vou. Tho moment a mini be- ■ comes an institution lo himself he begins lo be a boro to other?."
