LECTURE BY COLONEL POWLES
At the lecture given by Colonel Guy Powles on Thtursclay at tho Girls' College some interesting facts jyere given by the speaker, ■ Speaking of. tho work done in and around Jaffa, the lecturer 'referred to the beautiful' Zionist villages, containing from 200 to 500 inhabitants. .' 'Ihe maps used by tlio troops had been prepared by Kitchener in 1872, and as these villages have been built since they camo as a, surprise fo the< men. Colonel Powles also mentioned that while the' troops were near the Turkish colony of Deiran, ill December.' 1917, a bottle of wine was sent from the Governor of the town to tho Goneral, with the message that it came from the people of the oldest colony in the world to the people of the youngest colony. In referring to the home-sickness the men felt, the Colonel gave an instanco of the buying of a baby by the' men, which was taken to the camp, but owing to the difficulties of feeding it on crushed biscuits and condensed milkxit had to be returned to its mother. Interesting references were made to the remains seen of the work done by the Romans in the formation of roads., building of citadels and amphitheatres, and erection of strongholds in the town.
