PETONE BOROUGH

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Petone Borough Counc.il was held last evening. The Mayor';(Alr. J. W. M'Ewan) presided, and there ivere- also present Councillors C. Brockehbank, J. Chu rehouse, J. Kyle, 1. Newlant.l, ,T. M'Dougallj and D. M'Kenzie.

'A'ilson, Ltd., wrote aclvisinj,', that it was intended to'subdivide a block of land in Britannia Street, according to plan submitted, and asking for the council's, approval It. was decided to refer the matter to the borough 'engineer for a report. A letter was received from the "Dargavillo Borough- Council asking for the council's support for a resolution relative to the' German colonies in the Pacific and the- payment of indemnities by Germany,, and. leqiiesting that the council notify'the Prime Minister to that, effect. 'A'he council dcculed to support the. resorption. . The Mangalko Hydro-Electric Power League wrote Advising that owing to'the influenza epidepiic the deputation to the Government had been ■ abandoned! but the committee was circularising all members of Parliament. A. circular letter was received from the Newcastle Coal Importers advising' that owing to tho flAoi'tcige of coal the authorities had rejensed a. certain quantity of coal, some of hlikli had been sent to the Petone Council. Tho coal was intended for household purposes only, and is to be used sparingly, arid cases of sickness were to have preference. The Mayor of Christchurch sent a telegram to, (lie Major of Pelone advising Chat at a meeting held in Christchiirch on the-subject of relieving cases of distress resulting from the influenza epidemic, it was resolved lo ask the Government to make substantial l grants to all local bodies for purpose, and asking for (lie council's immediate support.

The Mayor (Mr. 'M'Ewan) said that immediately on receipt of the telegram he telegraphed to the, Priim? Minister to accedo_ to the reouest of the Mayor of Christchurch. Tlie Prime Minister replied that the mailer was being submitted to Cabinet.

The audited copy of the borough's bal-ance-sheet for the year ended, March 31. 191S, was received, and it was resolved to print and publish the same.
