CHRISTCHURCH TRAMWAYMEN
By Telegraph—Press Association. Ghristchuroh, October 18. On behalf of the Christclnirch Tramways 'Board, the General Manager has sent to the secretary of the Tmnnvaynten's Union (in reply to ihe latter's request for an increase in wages), a letter expressing surprise that no referenco was made in the union's ocniinunication to the fact that au agreement is already in operation, and has not yet expired, «nd inquiring why tho union has not followed tho usual practice of asking tho board for a conference to discuss the position. The letter also says that members of the board are tho trustees for the general public, and they cannot be expected to band over to their employees tho large sum asked for, involviiis; possibly an alteration in tho fares, simply on demand. On these alone the union ought not to depart from the usual custom of asking for a conference unless it lias already made up its mind to adopt tho coercive measures of tho Wellington men. "If that is your, policy," says tlii> letter, "then your present procedure can be understood. If that is not the union's intention it will probably ho prepared to follow the usual course, in which case au fewly date can lio arranged."
