A few days prior to the opening of the Battle of the Somme he was wounded, and. on lecpverv was selected for a -commission..,- He returned to New Zealand, left again with the Thirty-sixth Reinforcements, and ■met' his death within a few.weeks of bis return'to tho front. Lieutenant Shaw was a member of the last New Zealand University football team, and was a good all-round athlete.
Mrs. AY. , D. .Lyon.' of Wellington Terrace, will have many sympathisers in.--the loss of her youngest soil, Corporal Eric Lyon, who was a l.i'other of Rifleman Ronald K. Lyon-(secretary qf tho'Wellingtou'Savage Club). '■■The lato Corporal Lyon had a brilliant career at the Terrace School, where he gained a. scholarship in the .WellingtonCollege. Thore he gained a further seholarslnp, and at Victoria University gained his LL.B. degree. He was articled to Messrs. Kirk and Wilson, solicitors, Wellington, but. prior, \o going into camp was a Member of the legal-liriii. of Franks, Hunter, and Lyon. He left New Zealand v.Hh tho Twenty-fourth Reinforcements in .May, ,]sl7.. His widow is at nrescn.t in Wellington. His only child died recently when only 3J years old.
