SCHOONER ON FIRE
CREW ATTACK FLAMES WITH . HAND PUMP AND BUCKETS. By TeleEraph— Press Association. i Auckland October 6. The Northern Company's auxiliary schooner Greyhound, Captain Jt'Kinnon, en route from Auckland to Hokinnga, caught fire off Kawau Island on Saturday evening. She was towed back to port with the after part of tho ves- ' sel in flames and tho engine-room cud cabin gutted. The Are originated near the benzine tank in the engine-room,-The crew's effort to extinguish the fire with a hand pump and buckets was of no avail The Glenelg, which was bound to Auckland, passed tho Greyhound a quarter .of an hour before the accident,' and went alongside the burning vessel and towed her to Aucklan'J. On the way the Glenelg's crew kept a, stream of water from their steam pump playing on the flames, and also took on board their vessel 70 cases of benzine which was stowed near the lire. Tho vessel reached the Hobson Wharf at 11.16 p.m., where the city firo brigade was waiting. It took two Hours before the flames were subdued. The hull is charred on the inside aft and the cargo damaged by water.
