CONTROLLER' OK CONSTRUCTION GRATIFIED. London, ,September 8. Lord Pirrie (Controller of Merchant Ship Construction), interviewed after a visit to the shipyards, said lie was gratified at the general progress in the shipbuilding position. The efficient operation of the shipping control had improved the service by 22 per cent, since January. Notwithstanding a deficit of 594,000 gross tons during the first,scven months of the year between new construction and shipping losses, during the six months ending August 36 per cent, more tonnage, had liecn constructed, with an increase of only 8 per cent, more labour than in the preceding six months. —Aus.-N.Z.
