YESTERDAY'S LONG LIST

OVER SIXTY CASES

The Second Wellington Military Service Board sat in the city yesterday. Mr. J, W. Poynton, S.M., is chairman of tie board, and the other members arc Messrs. G. C. Williams and F. Curtice. Harold Boauohamp, general manager of tho Kodak Company, was appealed for bv his employers. The Union Stoam Ship Company. Herbert E. H. Aplin was appealed for by the Union Company, in whoso service In had been for 22 yeai-3. Aplin wns accountant and also was secretary of the Patent Slip Company. Mr. W. A. Kennedy, manager of tho Union. Company in Wellington, stated that at tho outbreak of war the company had 319 members on its clerical staff in New Zealand. Since then 67 had been retired for various reasons and 153 had enlisted for active service, and the wholo of them were on half-pay. That meant that 99 members of tho original stall were left. Of the 153 who went to the war, 2fi had returned to duty, bringing the original staff up to 125, so that there was an actual deficiency of 194. Of the 09 original members remaining, 30 ba.d been rejected as not fit for active service and 25 were still liable. If those 25 were called tho company would be in the position of having only 100 of tho original 300 or so. To replace those who had gone tho company had taken on 55 women, 105 bovs from school, and 24 men. Ship-pings-work was highly technical, and required years of training. Stoppage of work meant delay in shipping matters. Tho case was adjourned till tno lira meeting of tho board in Decembor, to see how things go then."

City Electric Lighting Department. James B. Bruce, an electrician in the City Electric-Lighting Department, was appealed for by the corporation authori-, t,es. It was stated that he department was running at overload and could no spare any more men. • The city engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton) Baid that the department's consumers in 19U numbered 9000 and now the number was 15,000. Yet the department had been carrying on without any increase in staff. The work of the department would lie greatly hampered if any more men were taken away. The caso was adjourned sine <lie.

Nciive, who appeared as counsel in respect of the-appeals, said that the (Jas Company could continue to manufacture gas without the aick-ot its fitters, but if the various other services the company rendered were to bo kept going the fitters must be retained. If « board thought it ws the duty ot ho company to furnish the city, with iheTShor services it should say that tho fitters should be retained. . The case of Day was adjourned e no die, and the other appeals were dismissed with leave till November.

Gear Company Employees. Appeals by the Gear Company were dealt with as folios-Horace Herbert I'arrant, clert and assistant tellmougei, Petone, leave till .November b; Henry Charles Jay, electrical engineer, Pctoie, adjourned till September; Charles Victor James, butcher, Wellington South leave till December; Harold George Holloway, slaughterman, leave till December. Slaughtermen and Shearers. Mr M. J. Keardon appeared for the following slaughtermen •-John, Dillon, Masterton; Ashton Alfrod Emus, Wanganuii Cameron Masters, Wangamn; Thomas Edward Cpoksley, Longburn; IVaneis Ninll, Wellington; Alfred Sheens, Cartertun; and Joseph Stringer, Carterton. , ... AH these cases wore adjourned tin September. ■ The following appeals for .-hearers were adjourned till September :-Oenrge M-Xaugnlin, Wellington; fcamuel Bates, Orari, and William Wardrop, Upper Kiccarton.

Eastbourne Borough's Overseer. Mr. W. Watson, a member of the Eastbourne Borough Council, appeared respecting the case of Frederick John Munro, borough overseer, Eastbourne, who had been passed as fit A. Mr. Watson said that a man 'had been endued to take Munro's place but the council wished to make sure chat Munro would bo kept in camp before it brought the new man and his family from llawern. A re-examination of Munro waa desired, as he had not informed the examining doctors of an old injury to his back. The council merely wished to mnke sure of the overseer's position before making the change, mentioned. Tin- bowl decided (o recommend a recxantination. A Company's Fine Record. Robert R.- D. Nichol, accountant, was appealed lor by his employers, Mossrs. Wright, Stephenson, and Co. Mr. B. D. Hunt, who represented the company, suid that the firm did mui'li work of importance to producing industries. The accountancy branch had rlready been considerably reduced. This was Ihc first appeal the company had made for any member of " its sttslF. One linmlvpd ami nine members of Ihe etiiiT had gone info camp. Thirteen had been killed, fourteen had returned and joined Hie staff, two others had returned who were Nipt main taking up work with the company. The loss of men Tind grnitly weakened the staff. Harold E. Honderson, Isaac ■ Meadows, and Hugh J. M'Hiigh, were appealed for hy W; Cable, their employer. The appeals were adjourned till December. ITarle, bank clerk, was granted an adjournment sine die, under the "only surviving son" clause- of the Aot, , L George Smith 11'Nair, accountant, was appealed for by tho Wellington Publishing Company. It wns stated that the staff had been considerably depleted, and that it was desired that M'Nair's leaving for camp should be postponed till the end of the year. An adjournment till December was made An. appeal wns made for 11. B. Gibbons manager and secretary, Wellington. His father said that the financial interests at stake wero too great to risk putting a substitute in the position, for which position tho reservist had had twelve years' training. .
