LIEUTENANT FRI.OKLETON TO UK WELCOMED. Winners of the Victoria Cross, who tielong to New Zealand, do not strive, hero very frequently. That is wli.v it liM been decided to givo a public welcome on Saturday io Lieutenant Samuel Frickelton. of Blackball, Grcyinouth. who naa licen awarded tho highest honour a soldier can altam to. Lieutenant Frickleton first enlistedjin January ,'H). 1915, and returned to New Zealand sick in September ot the sama year. On recovery lie re-enlisted oil April 1.4, 1916. and' was wounded and earned a Victoria Cross at the Battlo of Messines on June 7, 1917. At the time he won the Cross lie held tho rank of lance-corporal. Lieutenant Frickleton is returning to New Zcalnd with a draft which is expccted at Auckland. Mrs. Frickleton is at present in Wollington, and will meet her son here. The family record is indeed an inspiring one. Fivo brothers have served, tho record being as follows:—Private William T. Frickleton—Enlisted January 30, 1915; killed at the Battle of tho Soronie, September 28, 1916. Privato J. R. Frickleton—Enlisted January 30, 1915; wounded at: Uallipoli Sepcefnocr !i, ISIS; returned to New Zealand December Mi, 11)1.5. Privato Thomas AV\ Frickloton—Enlisted August S. 1914; wounded at Gallipoli May 8, 1915; returned to New Zealand heptemher 11.1915. Lieutenant S. Vricklcton-V.C., as recorded above. Gunner Herbert Frickleton—Enlisted (aged IS?) May N. 1918; wounded Battle ot Messines, and returiicd to New Zealand January 3, 1018. •'' „ T , "Seeterdav the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke. C.M.G., M.P.) had an opportunity of congratulating Mrs. Frickleton on the excellent: record to the credit of her fivo wins, and made special reference to tno honour conferred upon Lieutenant Frickleton. On behalf of the citizens lie expressed high appreciation of the deed •of valour which had won tho Cross, and. added so considerably to the fame of New Zealand soldiers in the present war. Tho Mayor has decided to hold a public welcome to Lieutenant Frickleton at the Town Hall-, on Saturday morninc next, ut 11 o'clock, and he hopes that' citizens will attend in Jarge numbers to honour a hero of Messines.
