A DANGEROUS CROSSING

Sir,—Another regrettable accident has 'happened at the railway crossing in Filzherbert Street, Featherslon. II ia about time that the railway authorities did something to make this notorious crossing safer Tor those who use it. This is th« fifth serious accidenl thai has happened to my knowledge within Ihe last two and a half years. (1) A military transport wagon was run into and two soldiers killed and several utliers injured. (2) A picnic parly were proceeding to have a day's outing; I heir vehicle was run into awl a young lady is a cripple for. life. (3) A well-known farmer was a boat to cross the line, the train approaching, when his horse swerved, and what might have been a serious accident was averted. It would have been one if it was a motorear and not a horse. (1) A motor cyclist was run into and seriously damaged. (5) Now, the last one, in which a motorcar driver and his passengers were injured. I am led to understand that the railway authorities secured about IS feet of the frontage of the land that adjoins the railway land, some two years ago, with the intention of removing the fence and trees that obstruct the view of those who are going towards the military camp direction. ' It is a pity that they have taken so long to make up their minds to do the right thing, and save people's property, and maybe their lives as well. If the fenco and trees are removed it will give a. view of the approaching tram from twelve to eighteen chains at a distance of about 100 feet back, from where) the rails oross Fitzherbert Street. I do not think that it is too much to ask the powers that control the railways to luirrv up. We can't spare any more property or lives. We want all our property and our men to win the war. In the interest of Featherston and the travelling public who,use this road, I uui, etc., C. DAN A HEY.

Note—This crossing is at the junction of four approaches, and is the most important traffic centre in Featherston. Therefore the need for the railway authorities to hurry up.—C.D.
